Just finished watching the Roy Jones Jr vs John Ruiz boxing match on PPV. This guy over came a 33 pound weight disadvantage and pretty much went 12 rounds of perfect boxing. Roy Jones Jr moves from Junior Middleweight all the way to Heavyweight with only 1 loss.
Pound for pound is he the best boxer in the world right now? Or possibly of all time?

Roy jones jr sucks....Maybe one day he'll fight a heavyweight boxer that throws punches and dont blame the loss on the referee...Ruiz is old and tired...roy jones jr is all hype...Let's not forget why he left that weight class. Because the competition was wack except for bernard hopkins, who roy jones ran from by leaving the weight class...Until next time...

Roy Jones is one of the all time greats, pound for pound. Surely, he is the best pound for pound fighter in the world today. But of all time? I'm not ready to concede that to anyone but the great Sugar Ray Robinson. Eight years without a defeat against some of the greatest fighters the middleweight division has ever seen, men like Henry Armstrong, Kid Gavilan, Carmen Basilio, Jake LaMotta, Rocky Graziano, Gene Fullmer and Fritzie Zivic. All of these men are in the Boxing Hall of Fame. Roy Jones has never fought a single fighter who is likely to make it into the Hall of Fame, with the possible exception of Bernard Hopkins.
In more recent times, Sugar Ray Leonard was another magnificent, all time great fighter. Losing only the first fight to Roberto Duran prior to his first retirement, he beat Duran, Thomas Hearns, Wilfredo Benitez, and Ayube Kalule. Again, the first three of these are Hall-of-Famers, and among the greatest fighters the welterweight division has ever seen.
Roy Jones has been a dominant force against a low level of opposition, and it is the lack of quality opposition that makes me question his all-time status. There are plenty of opportunities to prove himself among the heavyweights, should he choose to try.

Jones Jr. is the best. He's beaten everyone at his own weight, he's now gone up and down in size to beat others. He's done all and more than anyone could rationally ask of him. For him to go up in size more is unfair to him and he should be met in the middle by the likes of others so much bigger and heavier than him.

I actually wanted Roy Jones, Jr. to get knocked out by John Ruiz just like my former favorites Prince Naseem Hamed and Felix "Tito" Trinidad so he gets humbled but it was too one sided.
The fight was just sad.
John Ruiz literally got his ass handed to him. He shouldn't have bitched about the way it ended. Should have given Roy Jones the props he deserves unlike his old white haired trainer that was blaming the ref for everything. No class.
Roy Jones Jr., best pound for pound? Pretty close but not there in my opinion.
Fight Chris Byrd then Lewis, unify the WBA Heavyweight Titles and make me eat my words.
...
PS: Best part of the whole thing was no Roy Jones Jr. longwinded rap intro.

Roy Jones is a great fighter, probably the best of the last 15 years, but he has avoided great fights over the last 5 years.

And his opinion is that youre a fool and quite frankly I agree.
I think Roy Jones Jr. is a very good boxer but definitely not the best. Joe Frasier was pretty good. Sugar Ray Leonard was great too

Fight Chris Byrd then Lewis, unify the WBA Heavyweight Titles
yeah if you mena in that scenario that Lewis would unify the belts. I'd give Jones MAYBE a 10% chance of beating Byrd and no chance of beating Lewis, so you're right he will never EVER be the best pound for pound. Frazier was small too i think, so you've gotta give it to him.
And what was with Jones acting like Ali last night? He was fighting John Ruiz!!!!

Because the competition was wack except for bernard hopkins, who roy jones ran from by leaving the weight class For those of you who know SHIT about boxing: Roy Jones ALREADY beat Hopkins senseless. And he did it with a broken hand. Hopkins is looking for a payday on Jones' back because he can't beat him.

but he has avoided great fights over the last 5 years.
there's no one for him to fight! jesus why don't people see that. he fucking kills everyone, no one wants to fight him and there's no one good enough anyways.
people love to crucify this man but he does it every time. no one is even in his class, you guys can talk shit all you want but he will never be beaten. and don't give me shit about that loss it was a dq, no one beat him.
the only reason why he might not be the best ever is because he has no one to prove it with. i would love to see him with any of the classic fighters, he's just too quick and too powerful and too smart. anyone can doubt him all they want but i know everytime that whoever's unlucky enough to be in front of him in the ring is going down.

Roy Jones is great and I think one of the best of alltime, however he can fight bigger people if he wants. He picks his spots and fights opponents he thinks he can beat. That is why he did not fight Holyfield a couple years ago and why he will not fight Lennox Lewis. He is smart, he makes his millions by fighting lesser fighters. He does not want to get hurt. And why should he. He built an awesome career on fighting who he wants to on his terms.

Roy Jones fights each challenger for the light heavyweight championship in succession. When it's that man's turn he gets lined up and then he gets pummeled. Jones beaten everyone in his weight class and each challenger is a mandetory challenger. Why do people think that he should go up to a higher weight class just because the light heavyweights can't step up their game? The man has nothing to prove to anyone. No one wants him to fight heavyweights because they think he can win. They all want it because they want him to get hurt so they can all say "I told you so". Roy Jones isn't a heavyweight. He's 5'11" and he had to bulk up to get to 199 lbs. so why would so many people want him to fight a heavyweight? Ask yourselves. I seriously doubt it's for the love of the sport or the thrill of competition.

Teenweek hit it right on the money! Jones is a great fighter his only loss a DQ .But he selects his fights for himself he's his own manager. I would like to see Jones fight Byrd ( wieghs 215-219) . If he beats him at that wieght I will say he's top 5 fighter out of all- time fighters. I'm from Massachusetts where Ruiz if from and I still think he sucks hes a garbage fighter who throws a couple punches thens grabs and head buts his way to wear down his opponets. That match on saturday sucked Ruiz is a punk with no balls he could of just bulled his way into Jones Jr. but Ruiz was afraid to get tatooed so he back off, that fight sucked nuff said.

You absolutely cannot be serious. Roy Jones is clearly the greatest boxer alive and dismantled the Heavyweight Champion of the World. He is so great that he makes everything look so easy. He is 100% correct about Holyfield. Evander is old. he didn't rule out Byrd. he said he'd wants the money. Jones is NOT a heavyweight for God's sakes. He's a light heavyweight. he shouldn't have to fight Byrd.
Jones showed what control is all about. Ruiz was never able to get in the game. He even feared Roy's power as was evident by how he was buying the head fakes from a mile away. That was an amazing thing to see.
Roy is now a Heavy Weight. Does anyone remember that he started off as a Middle Weight. Moved to Super Middle, to Cruiser, to Light-Heavy. This is a man who has fought at 5 different weigth classes and has outclassed everyone in the ring. There is none finer.
Jones beat a heavyweight champion and it has pissed a lot of people off. Now they want Jones to fly to the moon to prove himself. He's the greatest boxer in the world POUND FOR POUND until somebody proves him wrong. Losing to lewis would not change that. Ray Robinson lost to Joey Maxim at light heavtweight and he's still considered the best of all time. It was not a boring fight to me. It showed how a great fighter can dismantle a bigger opponent and take the fight out of him. I saw all the technical aspects of what Roy was doing and thought it was great.
It seems to be ok when Sugar Ray Leonard fought that all-time great (being sarcastic) Donny LaLonde. Hell leonard wouldn't even fight the man at his weight (175) but made him come down to 167. Leonard even got sat on his ass!! Now should we discuss his fights with Duran (a natural 135 lber) or how about an out of prime Hagler? Yet people revere Leonard.
What did Ali do when he fought Foreman? Rope-A-Dope. What did RJJ do when he faced Ruiz? Toe-to-toe baby and didn't even get a scratch.
During the first half of the fight they were all questioning whether Roy Jones Jr could handle the punches, the weight, etc. Then After the 6th or so round, they started in on how Ruiz was not that great of a fighter. Where the hell was all this talk in the beginning.
I hate to put it out there like that, but Roy Jones Jr is just that damn good. George Foreman would not let them discredit Roy Jones Jr victory and I am glad. It took a lot of skill, and Ruiz was a legitimate heavyweight champion.
Let's add this. He's been a pro for 14 years and is 34 years old and he emerged from the Ruiz fight without a scratch on his face. Ruiz may have landed 2 significant blows. Now people want Jones to beat Holyfield (which he could do) even though Ruiz fought him 3 times. Then what? Jones faces Lewis? Is this what "boxing fans" want? My ass. They just want to see Jones lose.
I don't think people should start comparing him to Lewis.... Lewis is a natural heavyweight. RJJ is the pound for pound best fighter I have ever seen. Lewis is 6'6 or 6'7 and is NATURALLY 250-260 lbs. Roy Jones Jr. is 5'11 and NATURALLY 157 lbs.
Jones is the best POUND FOR POUND in the world. He needn't face the Klitchkos or Lewis or Tyson. He's not a natural heavyweight. He's a natural 154 lber. "Fans" need to remember that.

Now that Sanders totally annihilated the younger Klitchkow (sp?) brother last night, he seems like an interesting fight for Roy Jones, Jr.
But the money fight, would be Tyson vs. Jones. Period.

Personally, i think roy jones is a great fighter. However, to become the best boxer "pound for pound" he would have to beat "The Greatest" Lennox Lewis. In other words, he would have to not only beat the world champ, but beat a man who combines finess, power, and speed into a total package.
It would be a classic,But jones would have to bulk up about 15 pounds to even stand a chance aganst his fury. So until he beats the best in his division today, he is not "pound for Pound" the best. But thats just my opinion.

you cant deny that roy jones is a great fighter, but his heavyweight debut was not that great.
he fought ruiz, who is a slow clumsy fighter whos style is to back guys into the ropes and hit them with elbows and forearms. that is why he is a pretty successful heavyweight. he doesnt have to fight guys all that quick, and when he does fight a good fighter he loses. if ruiz ver tried to fight a real heavyweight competitor, like lennox lewis, he would get demolished.
the same is true with roy jones. jones is a great fighter, and i cant deny it at all. i just want to see him fight a good heavyweight before i can judge him impartially
