When I look into the shadows of manhatten, will I see a huge penis?

I'm glad this plan was chosen. First, I'm glad that it will have the world's tallest building - that record should be held by NY again! And, I like the feature that, at least in the design as it was originally unveiled, the buildings will be designed so that on the morning of September 11, each year, no shadows will be cast on the memorial. That's just cool.

Yes, I am also happy, and I didnt want that whole space to be used as a memorial (just a medium sized portion of the origional towers' positions). Seems like a good idea, except for the world's tallest dick part.

but it's just the spire that's tall! the top floor won't be more than the average NY building.

Slate has a critique online here:

http://slate.msn.com/id/2079228/

The sentimentality of the design gets me.

And I'll miss the way the light hit the Towers in the morning. . .maybe this was something you could only see from NJ, but, there was a point where the sunlight would hit all that glass & steel and the Towers would look like they were made of gold.

Oh well. That was the past. Too bad it's not something I can see in the future.

Why can't it be an American firm that rebuilds the WTC?

So what if the spire is the part that is truly the world's tallest? We still have the biggest dick. I just hope it will have an observation deck at or near the top.

I like this plan better than the skeleton towers. My favorite design was the on the was reminiscent of the original towers, with the two towers close together. But I guess this is alright.

And this building may technically be biggest in the world because of the spire. The only reason the Petronas Towers in Malaysia are the biggest in the world is because of its spire. If we judged buildings on their highest occupied floor, the Sears Tower would still be the biggest in the world, at least until Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Shanghai finish some buildings now under construction. Damn chinks. They're just building huge buildings for the sake of nit, not because they need the space.

I dont like it. I think the spire is ok, but a little imature if the intent was to make it the largest in the world - which it wont be in a few months to a few years anyway when some other manly state or country wants to have the biggest deek.
My problem with it is the other buildings. They do nothing for the skyline from what I can see on their pics. I'm with HBox on the choice of the towers which were closer together. I think this is it. <img src=http://www.newsday.com/media/photo/2002-12/5908426.jpg width=350>
Its a little quirky, but cool that they meet. Actually, the more I look at it, the more I dont like it. Oh well. I've always like this one:

i dont like this.... i think it sounds nicey and garbage but when it's actually done it's going to be an eyesore

plus i dont really think a big tall spire is a such a great memorial. i like the memorial in hiroshima - which is just the remains of the bombed out church and a museum that give you the feel of what it would have been like to be there. how is building some tall phallic symbol going to memorialize the wtc?

I guess it's the most tolerable out of the horrible, horrible final designs. I guess. Why are the Germans trying to trick us with faggy-looking hippie crystal? I can't picture what it's actually going to look like...but so far, it looks like a mess.

I liked the other finalist better: the one that had the lattice reminder of the twin towers on the footprints where it used to stand. This is too asymetrical and will clash with the NY skyline

The design is based on what Slate describes as "the shard". . . something that's been shattered.

Maybe that's why I have such a problem with it. It's like seeing the implosion all the time, larger than life and twice as ugly.

I didn't see many of the other designs, but I took an immediate and violent dislike to the "latticework" towers. They creeped me out because they look too twisted to me.

A while back, nearer to the event, Slate ran a piece which featured a proposal for a double ferry-dock which would extend out into the Hudson River. It would represent the height of the Towers and, at each "storey", the names of those who died there would be engraved. These docks would be ports for ferries back and forth between Liberty Island and Ellis Island, allowing you to experience the full effect of the things that made the USA a target - its embrace and celebration of differences brought here by its immigrants, and a symbol of our Nation's freedom. Too bad I can't find the link. . . maybe they will revive it this week.

... The memorial hasn't been announced yet.... this is the competition for the overall site, not the memorial. That comes in the spring....

... This isn't the GERMANS designing the site for us.... it is an international architectural design firm... and Libeskind is one of the top architects in the world...

tough call...

we're proving a point but is it really necessary to go that tall?

who the hell is gonna want to work in this building?

True, tough call. You would imagine as soon as its built it will become a "#1 target" again. Call me a wimp, or whatever, but I wouldn't want to work in that complex of buildings.

I wonder if any special "defense mechanisms" will be put in place.
