It represents the country itself, and the people in it. A true patriot seeks to reform problems within their country's government, not turn their back on them completely. If every time there was an injustice in this country, everyone just threw their hands up and said "fuck this", there would still be slavery, there would still be segregation, there would still be unfair working conditions, and this country would SUCK. If you have a dispute with government policy, you're supposed to DEFEND the wellbeing of your nation and retain the principles that you feel are right to maintain your country's standards of life. Whether that means being critical of the government or not. She is just rejecting the entire country all together. Your right and responsibility as a citizen is to improve this country, not abandon it while still taking advantage of its opportunities. That's called hypocrisy. If she hates being here so much, this bitch should just leave and give her cozy American home to someone who actually wants it. Like I said before, a proud respectable person would seek to fix what she sees as a problem, not turn her back on the country (flag). Stupidity is a disease, and she needs to be cured of it. She didn't turn her back on the flag, she had the flag to her left side. :) Regardless, I'm not attacking or defending her actions. I think she's just trying to make a point that not everyone in the country supports our foreign policy. Maybe this wasn't the most appropriate way of showing her protest, but it is drawing national attention to 'her' issue. Maybe something bigger will come of it (protests, petitions, actual policy change, etc.) or probably she will just wind up being the CUNT that didn't face the flag during the anthem.

Yet another college student who looks at things in all-too-simple terms and doesn't take "the big picture" into account.

Standing and facing a flag (any country's flag) is a sign of respect. If I go to a game or event in Canada or another country and they play their national anthem, I will face their flag and respect their country. That is common courtesy. You may not agree with their beliefs, but you give them courtesy. The same courtesy should be extended to our flag.

If she's so upset with the possibility of war with Iraq, and thinks that the US is not the greatest place to live, then tell us where she thinks the greatest place to live is! All the posts above defending her talk about her "protesting", and say that you have to "challenge people's ways of thinking". Well, there's no challenge here. She's not communicating a clear message as to what she's protesting (until the media got involved), and apparently she's not offering alternative ways to view the situation. This doesn't sound like a protest to me.

She's exercising her "right of free speech", but disrespecting the country that gives her that right. That's what she's doing. Is she passing out leaflets or speaking to groups of students about why the possible war with Iraq is wrong? I don't see any mention of that in the article. Sounds all too much like attention-whoring.

True, but it would be nice to see a discussion of the reasons of what she did rather than chastising her just for the action of turning away from the flag.

I see similar parallels to 9/11. After it happened we just wanted to kill anyone associated with the event (justified in my opinion), but I think we are lacking in trying to understand why these people did what they did.

By the way, I don't know if you've ever been to Mexico or other poor latino countries, but goods are dramatically less expensive there. The comparatively smaller yearly incomes are not that bad within the context of their economy. It's only wen you apply American standards for compensation for services rendered do you see how dramatically underpaid they are.

Sure they can leave if they feel like it and then starve trying to find work elsewhere. Some choice. It might not be slavery but it's serfdom and practically indentured servitude for sure. There's not a whole hell of a lot of options for those people. They are there by choice I guess but they obviously don't have many choices otherwise why would they choose to work under such poor conditions for extremely substandard wages. The conditions here are better than say back in Mexico or Haiti, where migrant workers have nothing to eat but the sugar cane they pick and they lose all their teeth by the age of fifteen.

As I've stated previously, the flag represents the philosophies, tenets, and beliefs this country was founded upon. Disrespecting the flag is no way to show your disapproval of the current state of the country; it's basically pissing on the graves of the founding fathers and all the men and women who have died defending and honoring those ideals.

I guess the only way I can further illustrate my point is to give you a personal example. I despised Bill Clinton as a President. His phoniness and arrogance literally made my skin crawl. Every day he was in office I had a knot in my stomach. It was nothing short of unbearable to me that the people of this country could be so easily fooled by such a huckster. He reeked of a snake oil salesman to me, and that's not even mentioning his politics, which were equally disdainful to me. And yet, I proudly hung my American flag outside my house every day of his Presidency (weather permitting, of course) just as I continue to do to this day.

The thought of burning or shredding the flag, my flag, would never even occur to me. Those who sacrificed everything to make this country great have nothing to do with current affairs, and I'd never disgrace their memories that way.

And let me also say, that I have a friend who had his own landscaping company, and those "poor migrant workers" from Mexico have put him out of business, becuase they CHOOSE to come here illegally and work for below the minimum wage. They also cause a LOT of crime in my town, so yeah I'm prejiduced against them. They don't look so hard off to me, they have plenty of money to spend on Corona and plenty of time to harass women on the street.

This was in 96 - E was just getting popular and most kids didn't know where to get it... I don't even know the going rate for a pill today (back then it was like $20)

Just my two cents on this whole thing. I say good for her to show her freedom of speech and expression. Although I don't really agree with what she is doing, she has balls and is making a statement. I would never disrespect the flag but when we have a beedy-eyed idiot of a President who slimed his way into the White House and I have absolutely zero trust in, I feel as if his actions have been a bit unAmerican. I am ashamed to have him as a president but pray to God that he will do the right thing.

I have no disrespect for what our flag stands for and those who have died for my freedom and the freedoms of everyone in this country but our Governments actions sometimes disgace what the flag means and then I have a problem. In the words of the great Jack Kennedy..."Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country". The problme is this fucking generation has no reason why they are protesting. They see that it was done in the 1960's by our parent's generation and think that is the way to go about things (Side note: that generation were so close to great things and fucked up and mostly became yuppie scum). Yes the war in Vietnam made no sense. We were fighting the "evil forces of communism", with no clear dedication to the war or objectives it seemed.

This time around we were fucking attacked ourselves!!!!!!! Never EVER forget that people. We were fucking attacked on September 11, 2001!!!! NEVER FORGET THAT FACT!!! And since there is no black and white picture like after World War Two when we knew to go after Japan, there is only gray and makes things more confussing. But if eliminating Saddam and others who harbor terrorists to make life safe for us again, then se la vie. To turn your back on the flag, especially in Manhattanville, is to me tantamount to treason. Go live in Iraq for a little while you arrogant yuppie scum cunt!!!! Lets see how long you turn your back on the American flag after that. Fuck her, she should be shot...

i know people get annoyed when freedom of speach is used to demonstrate an unpopular opinion, but it's a very important concept, not to be so easily dismissed.
although an opinion may be unpopular, we must allow it to have a voice. after all, as ron and fez said, it is often the minority opinion that becomes the popular one later on (not that that's necessarily true in this case. i'm confused to hell over whether we should go to war or not).
we can't just say "let's suspend freedom of speach for this one instance." it's always or never. so u either deal with people's opinions that u don't like, or we start reverting to a more primitave sort of government that resembles that of iraq. (u demonstrate against the government there and a lot of the things people proposed be done to that girl are actually done to u)
you may disagree with her and be of the opinion that she's ignorant or a moron, and that's fine. for all i know you may be right. it's when we start talking about killing people because they dissagree with the government that things get scary.
anyway, i doubt i convinced anyone one way or the other, but at least i put my thoughts together into some semi-coherent paragraphs. that's got to be worth somthin
