This upcoming season looks like there will be 4 new members of the 500 home run club. Sosa, Griffey JR, Palmiero and MGriff. How many of these guys do you think will make it on their 1st try?
It used to be if you had the numbers like 3000 hits 500 homeruns and Ptchers who had 3000 strikeouts would be a lock for the hall of fame.
There are some players who arent in the hall of fame like Bert Blyleven who is 5th all time on the strikeout list. Also it took don sutton a number of times to get into the hall. And he had 324 wins as a pitcher. Makes you wonder if people like Wade Boggs and Tony Gwynn will make it on their 1st try
Kinda makes you think when the #1 rapper is white and the #1 golfer is black

Boggs, Gwynn and Kirby Puckett were the best hitters of the 80s. They have the "requisite stats" and should make it in their first time out.

Gwynn should make it on the first try, but something tells me Boggs won't. I think he'll get in, just not on the first try...many of the guys who vote for this won't vote a guy in on his first try, just on principle, unless his numbers resemble Mantle's. When you add that to the guys who just won't vote for a Yankee & the guys who love the Sox & think Boggs soiled himself by winning a ring with New York, I just don't see him going on the first ballot.

Rafael Palmeiro has quietly had himself a Hall of Fame career.
Avg: .293
RBI: 1575
HR: 490
Hits: 2634
He's about 37 or 38, so he may have two or three good years left in him. With two more seasons and playing on that Texas team, he'll tack on another 60 - 70 homeruns, 180 - 190 RBI, and have close to 3,000 hits. Pretty good numbers if you compare to some of the other players in the Hall. First ballot? Maybe, deserving of a plaque? Definitely.
Edit: WOW! I stand corrected. He should definitely be a first ballot. Let's compare:
Avg: .298
RBI: 1509
HR: 536
Hits: 2415
Know who those belong to? Mickey f'n Mantle, and he played one more season than Palmeiro has. We need to see how his last seasons play out, but the way things seem, if Palmeiro doesn't go in first ballot it's a travesty.

After doing some research, Ive noticed that people like mantle for example, before the 1960s had better "resumes" Mantle is in the 500 hr club but he was a 3 time MVP, won the triple crown and has a bunch of world series records.
Eventually, putting upj ust numbers might not guarantee a player in the hall on the 1st try
