View Full Version : Mets Fans... do you want Griffey?

They posed this question on MSG's Talk of Our Town:

Would you be aggressive in trying to pick up recently embarrassing All-Star Ken Griffey, Jr., if you were Mets GM Steve Phillips?

Cincinnati's manager Bob Boone even went as far as to call Phil Nevin to waive his no trade clause so Griffey can leave Cincy for San Diego. Griffey will probably even go to the Mets (he rejected a trade to NY a few years ago) cuz it seems that the team and the fans don't want his hometown Cincy ass anymore.

The New York Mets thus far, have shown no interest!?!

The hosts, Bill Daughtry and Bob Wischusen threw out a deal idea of Cedeno, Heilman and maybe Timo Perez or maybe taking up a large portion of Cedeno's salary.

I would definitely give up Cedeno for anything right now but Heilman could be a solid front-line pitcher for the Mets in the future. So Heilman is a definite no no in my opinion. If I was Phillips I would package Cedeno, Trachsel (cuz they need a starter in Cincy), 3rd base blue chipper teenager David Wright or pitching prospect Scott Kasmir with cash. I think Cincy would take it but they will probably take anything right now. The smell of desperation is in the air.

I'd rather have an injury prone Griffey with his power potential and patrolling centerfield for the Mets for years to come than Cedeno with his limited range and possible stolen base potential.

If yes, who would you give up.

I would trade a Burnitz or a Cedeno for him...maybe throw in a Jason Middlebrook or a decent prospect just not like a Heilman or anything

As a die-hard Cincinnati Reds fan, no one is more disappointed than me that Griffey has failed to live up to expectations in his hometown. He seems to be terribly unhappy, and I think it would be best for him to leave.

Now, what are you offering in return?

no fucking way... i don't think he has it anymore... he just seems to get hurt no matter what he does... i would definately not give up any prosects for a once good outfielder, we have a shit load of them now. Griffy has shown nothing since going to the reds and is not deserving to part of a 3 for 1 trade... he is a cry baby and shit if he can't take the fans in Cinci do you really think he can handle the new york area fans... i don't think so... let him go out west fuck griffey..

Griffey is a perfect fit for the New York Mets or the Boston Red Sox. Another so-called "superstar" they can sign that will "guarentee" them a champonship, and of course he won't deliever. It's all too perfect.

Keep Griffey away from the Mets. The Mets signed plenty of players last year who didn't live up to expectations. They don't need more of the same this year. Plus they need to replenish the pitching staff. Better to keep the prospects for the long term rather than give them up for Griffey who probably won't perform in the short term.

fatty, I hardly ever disagree with you, and right now your statement is correct. But there's a difference between Giambi and every other bust the Mets and/or Sox have signed in the past 5 years, Giambi will have a ring if he stays with the Yankees, all those other players won't.

My boy G, instead of Griffey.... how about Kearns for Cedeno, Kasmir and Trachsel? Do we have a deal?

Hey, we may pick up Carlos Beltran anyway... that would be sweet.

Griffey can rot in Cincinatti. He had his chance and he blew it. There is no way he can handle the NY press if he can't handle f'n Cicinatti. I would rather steal the young center fielder from the Royals anyway. And he will be available this year.

I didn't see anything, I didn't hear anything, I wasn't there and if I was there I was asleep.

The Mets should trade their whole team for the Cubs (excluding first base coach extraordinaire Mookie Wilson).

I think you make the trade for him as long as you don't have to give up Reyes. It can't cost you much, both Griffey & the Reds are so unhappy they can't wait to part ways. And even if it costs your best AAA pitching prospect, it's not like your homegrown arms have a very positive track record...no young pitcher is a can't miss (see: Brien Taylor).

What's the worst that can happen: he becomes another underproducing, formerly "headed for greatness" outfielder...that's nothing new in Shea. What's the best that could happen: happy & healthy for the first time in years, he returns to being God in baseball spikes. Even if you wind up giving up pitching prospects, with the extra people he'll bring to Shea you can buy yourselves some pitching next year...and maybe a better batting practice jersey, who designs that shit?

Either way, you're still the redheaded stepchild of New York baseball...but I mean that in the best possible way.

This is so true...my good friend got drafted in the early stages of the first round (as a pitcher) and was expected to be in the pros in a matter of 2 or 3 years....3 surgeries later he is contemplating retiring at the age of 23

Mookie Wilson's gone, Mark?!? Motherfuckers! Forget about trading anybody, I'm gonna take Fred Wilpon hostage until he re-instates Mookie! (and maybe I'll swing by John Sykes' house; wink-wink, nudge-nudge)...just kidding!........no I'm not.
