My new ink

In celebration of my 40th year on this planet, I decided to treat myself to what will probably be my last tat. I designed and drew it myself on the computer.

As you can see, it's somewhat "tribal" and incorporates a symbol of my longtime nickname. And yes it goes completely around the arm. (pardon the crustiness...it was just done this past Friday night)

That brings me to my question. This past Saturday our slightly new-age, hippie babysitter checked it out and said that according to Indian tradition, a closed band will prevent my spirit from leaving my body when I die. It doesn't bother me too much since based on my life so far, my spririt is going south. Anyone ever hear of this?

A couple of sites say different things about dolphin symbolism:

Who gives a fuck what anyone else thinks, it's a matter of personal choice and I think it's really nice.

One of my good friends is a tat artist and did Marilyn Manson's tats. He is an art graduate from Cooper Union and awesome and is going to do mine.

As far as the dolphin, it is true that a lot of women have them and like them. I've heard the main reason is that dolphins are one of the few animals that are monogamous. When a mate dies they "mourn" and more often than not, do not take another mate.

Dolphins are also compulsive masturbators, if that means anything....

As far as lesbians go, the most common animal tat is the iguana. If you see a chick with an iguana tat, most likely she is a lesbian. There is a particularly high incidence of female/female life pairings in iguanas.

i still think that a dolphin tattoo in the nature that you had gotten it is pretty homo-erotic if you ask me. And there are many manly tattoo's out there that are completely original. In all honesty, your design is far from original. Simple tribal armband... with a dolphin in it. It looks like something you picked right off one of the flashcards. If you want something manly, and cannot think of anything, just go with something by Sailor Jerry.

I actually just had gotten my butterfly knife worked on some more last weekend. My artists machine backfired and i kept nodding off. I was so god damn exhausted so thiank god his machine backfired... i came right home and went to bed. I have about 1 more sitting left in the knife. but then we are going to start working on the whole left arm.

and to the guy who only got one tattoo and it hurt so much. grow up baby! getting a shot hurts more then getting tattoo'd.

I'm curious: what makes it "homo-erotic"? I personally would not be able to pick out something that is homo-erotic. I guess I have had different experiences. And I didn't title this thread "My new, manly ink". Maybe I should have pierced the dolphin with a dagger? That way so many people would not be offended by a guy with only a dolphin on his arm.

As for original, it is in the sense that I accomplished what I set out to do: come up with a simple tribal band with a simple tribal dolphin in it. If it looks like something you've seen on a flashcard, then it is pure coincidence. I hadn't even stepped foot in the shop until I had the design completed.

I think I'll make this my last retort to comments about the tat. There's no point in it anymore. Besides, I don't need Officer Moe coming down on me again. Congrats on your recent work. Take a pic and post it. I would enjoy seeing the work.

Tattoos are personal body adornment. You don't get them for other people, you get them for yourself.


First, looks great to me, Flipper; I like the way the dolphin is incorporated in the pattern.

Second; I couldn't agree more with the statement about tattoos being personal; because I see SO many that aren't; you can tell they're about someone else [Winona Forever, anyone? Or having BILLY BOB on your arm]. Hey, it's great if you know you will want to proudly display this for a very long time, but...

I really researched my tatts. I wanted the non-standard. And I wanted a definite shape [round, for mine] coz, no offense to some I see in the street who may be regs here, but you ever see those tatts that basically look like glops of shit on the person's body unless you get real close in to see what it is?

I think many today are getting tatts theyre gonna regret. Not the vast majority; but I know more then a couple of people getting tatts lasered off; and wow did I find out how long and expensive THAT shit is! Yow!
