a co-worker told me that he need to come in late tomorrow because he had to go fight a ticket. Now naturally I assumed he meant a parking or speeding ticket. No, he was sitied by the Dpt. of Transportation for having litter on his property. he claims it was a candy wrapper and a piece of paper, soe sort of flyer that had blown into his yard.
Is this common? I've never heard of this happening. He lives in Queens.

I worked in a store in Chelsea. We always had to keep the sidewalk in front of our store clean. If a garbage bag broke we had to clean it up or get fined. I've NEVER heard a private residence getting ticketed for litter though.

i used to live above a deli in queens and they got 2 fines for 250 bucks each on the same day for having litter on the sidewalk. since it was accross the street from a high school and the kids all hung out there, the only way to not get a fine everyday would be to have someone constantly following all these kids around cleaning up after them. i wonder where all the money goes...

with such a small amount of litter it seems like a petty thing to do...

maybe a notice but not a ticket...

I actually feel that the Municipalities should do more follow-up with residents that keep junk, or litter on thier properties and also if thier landscaping is overgrown or in tatters...

i've never heard of a residential property being ticketed for litter, especially so little. sounds a bit ridiculous

I got a ticket in NYC for throwing a bag of garbage in a "city" garbage can , actually I got 2 tickets , they dismissed 1 after I was found to be guilty and paid a $75 fine. I got a ticket the same week for having my auto registration in the wrong spot on my windshield.

my friend just moved in astoria, queens and they got a couple of tickets for garbage in front of their house. I think it just started and each ticket is like more than a $100.

Eh, every town can have their own ordinances, so it's up to the town government. My town once told the guy across the street that he had to re-paint his house or they'd be fined or evicted from their own property! It wasn't even that bad.
