I'm looking for a good new charity that does worthwhile things. Any recommendations
aside from "donate to me dude". Ever since 9/11 I've been trying to be more active in giving, and I'd like to find some that aren't on either side of a politic spectrum, but more devoted to actually doing something for the cause.

One way to give also is to donate blood.
I give to .the Red Cross.
It's always in need, you'll feel good about giving, plus they treat you really well when you go in there.
It impresses chix too.

I usually donate to Lighthouse for the Blind and American Cancer Association. They both have good reps for getting the money to where it belongs- not like that scam outfit that Jerry "Fatboy" Lewis fronts for!!!!

I used to help this hospital my uncle works at donate their old stuff to 3rd world countries.
They would throw this stuff in the garbage just because something new had come out.
They'd throw something worth a few thousand dollars that was maybe 3 years old in the garbage, just because there was a better model out.
They sent this stuff to places like Thailand, Cambodia, and a few other places.

thanks for the ideas, this is what i'm looking for. something where it's actually being put to use. not for the purpose of adding a shiny new calculator on someones desk or a dvd player. i gave to several firehouses that were affected by the 9/11 attack and it was great to see that the money was appreciated because it was so needed. i've always felt that organizations like United Way and the Red Cross were nothing but sham outfits more interested in lining their own pockets than actually doing good with the money.

I have this phobia about giving money to charities...
I always feel someone within the organization is lining their pocket...

I prefer to tip well when deserved, give directly to homeless and needy people on the street, and anyone that comes into my home gets a good meal...

I've also donated a ton of good clothing over the years...
