39 people got killed when a pyrotechnic fire at a "Great White" show started a deadly inferno. The Guitarist from the badn is missing as well. I'd wait at least a few weeks before saying you were surprised that 39 people werea t a Great White concert.
Anyways, just fucking awful. It seems like from many reports that the fire statred behind the stage and many of the crowd thought it was part of the show, but then panic ensued. Fucking horrible.

I saw this on the TV just as I was leaving the house for work this morning. Wow, from the brief glimpse I got there was some pretty horrible news footage of blaze. There were people crammed together, stacked up at the front door of the club trying to breathe, the thick, black smoke billowing out above them. Serious, serious shit. Apparently the fire was started by pyro for the show that was approved by club management, at least that's what Jack Russell said. I guess this coupled with the Chicago incident earlier in the week is probably gonna launch some kind of probe in club and concert safety measures. About time, I say.

The death toll is up to 60+ this is really horrible. I've been to plenty of small shows like this and I can imagine how horrific that had to have been...

I've been there a few times...
It was the kind of place where everybody knew everybody.
Not like in NY where every hour there are new faces in a
club. Odds are among those 60 now confirmed dead they
were regulars and they had a lot of friends there.
It's awful.

This tragedy was very avoidable. Sure, the band used Pyro in a very small space, and yes that was stupid but... HAVE YOU SEEN THAT TAPE?!
The Bassist on Stage-right is literally standing there watching the blaze begin! What the fuck is that all about? He could've made an announcement, or at the very least, stopped playing and tell the rest of the band! Sure, the audience might have (stupidly) thought the fire was part of the show, but the Bassist knew some serious shit was going down!
You can see people in the audience trying to signal the Singer (trying to get him to turn around). Again... when there's a fire, you're supposed to look for the exit!
No sprinklers in a public place? What the hell is that all about? The warehouse where I keep my old furniture has a sprinkler!!
I blame the venue. No sprinklers?! No fire-alarms?! Sounds like the owner tried to save a few bucks. Enjoy your lawsuit...assshead!

Of course the blame came quickly, but it's looking like despite the fact that Great White claims they checked with the club about their "pyrotechnics", the club is saying they weren't informed. This is being corroborated by the owner of the Stone Pony who, according to msn.com, is saying that Great White played there last week and used the pyro without checking with the club. The soundguy there freaked cuz of the heat. The same thing could have happened there. Hell, it could have happened anywhere. It's sad and it's a shame, but someone is responsible.
Edited to add: the body count is up to 75

The updated story at msn.com mentions a club owner from Minneapolis is saying a fire was started there on Monday by sparklers but the 120 people were evacuated. It doesn't specifically mention it was a Great White show, but it's certainly implied. If that's true, then those guys are sooo fucked.
The "official" Great White site took down the tour dates so I couldn't confirm if they were in Minneapolis on Monday or not. Also, it turns out, like so many other "80's metal bands", Great White consists of original singer Jack Russel and... that's it. As for the rest of them he says he "put together a great young band that do a great job at reproducing the songs in the live element." Perfect. And now one of the guitarists might be dead. Happy, Jackie boy?

another unfortunate example of club owners violating building codes with disasterous results...i hope they get the chair...

I dont' remember where I read it, but I read that the club did not violate any building codes. They weren't required to have a sprinkler system because, and it was inspected in December '02. They passed the inspection and had only minor problems that were fixed. Of course, they did not have a permit for the pyrotechnics with the band claiming they got permission from the club owners and the club claiming they did not give permission.

They said on the news that more or as many people died in this fire than the Waco compound fire...

I dont care if it's mandatory or not....
a public place like that should have sprinklers.
There is lots of alcohol, lots of cigarettes, and lots of lighting & neon signs.
Club owners should WANT to install sprinklers. For our safety and also to protect their investment.

The death toll is up to 95.
The building was 60 years old and small enough that it did not require a sprinkler system. It would have been very expensive to have renovated the whole place when it wasn't legally required. There were apparently 3 other exits that hardly anyone used because people's first instinct is to go out the way they came in.
Seems to me that if the band had been using these pyrotechnics for the past few weeks and caused problems (and possibly the evacuation of another club) then they should have taken a look at their little show and toned it down a bit for the smaller clubs. Luckily the Stone Pony is big enough that it wasn't an issue, but if you saw the video, they had no business using that shit on that stage, whether they had permission from the club or not.
