Alfred Molina (Frida, Identity) will join Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst and James Franco in Columbia Pictures' highly anticipated sequel to Spider-Man, it was announced today by Amy Pascal, Chairman of Columbia Pictures.

Molina will portray Spider-Man's new archenemy "Doc Ock" in the second installment to Columbia Pictures' 2002 worldwide phenomenon Spider-Man, which grossed more than $820 million worldwide and became the fifth highest grossing movie in U.S. history. Spider-Man is based on the classic Marvel Comic book series.

The sequel will reunite the cast and filmmakers from the original blockbuster, including Maguire, Dunst, and Franco along with director Sam Raimi, and producers Laura Ziskin and Avi Arad. Columbia Pictures co-president of production Matt Tolmach is overseeing development of the project for the studio.

Raimi will begin principal photography in April and the new film will be released in 2004.

"Alfred Molina has a remarkable facility for everything from classic drama to mainstream comedy and he is the ideal choice for 'Doc Ock,'" said Pascal. "We wanted an actor that would bring irresistible depth and dimension to this role and we are all tremendously excited to be working with Alfred."

I like it.

He's the dude in the beginning of Raiders of the Lost Ark - the "Throw me the idol, I throw you the whip" guy. I think it'll work, he's weird looking enough.

Seems like Sam Raimi is picking the people that are right for the part, rather than who will rake in the most money. He probably remembers the clusterfuck that Arnold Schwarzenegger was in Batman and Robin.

Maybe he knows that a good movie will make more that way I just hope they get a good script..

Hmm. Not a bad pick. It does seem as if Raimi is choosing actors who best suit the role instead of casting big-name Hollywood actors who only serve to fuck up the picture *coughBatmanfranchisecough*.

However, I'm still disappointed, seeing as the rumor I heard was that Sam Neill would be getting the part. Sam Neill > Molina.

I was hoping they would do a movie about Venom this time around, but he seems like a perfect fit for Dr. Octopus.

Great choice. Molina was also the cokehead that Dirk and Reed try to sell fake blow to in Boogie Nights (think Jessie's Girl, Sister Christian, firecrackers, and guns).

O.K. I know this is a Spidey thread but even though Batman and Robin was campy I thought Arnold was a perfect Mr. Freeze. As long as the Spiderman franchise keeps with the right people that write the scripts you could see at least 3 movies all together with out it getting to boring. But they gotta keep Toby.

I think patrick stewart woulda been better for Freeze, but the role wasnt serious so it wouldnt have worked.

Bill from Yorktown, I remember hearing about Patrick Stewart WAY before the movie came out. Was that a legitimate rumor, or did some fan just make that up? Maybe if Patrick Stewart was Mr. Freeze, the role would have been more serious.

I always thought Doc Ock was a little lame, but Molina is a great choice. Personally a better villian would be Sandman(conflicted about being a criminal) or Venom( Spidey has to beat a stronger foe). I hope they don't do a Schumacher and throw in extra characters to sell friggin Mc Donalds toys.

I didn't see anything, I didn't hear anything, I wasn't there and if I was there I was asleep.

Avi Arad, he's the main guy at Marvel Films, said that Spiderman2 will only have one villain. They're gonna do this series right.

Looks like all the principals are here. We have a complete unknown as the bad guy, but if they can keep him from gnawing on the scenery, we are go for not-sucking. ^_^

Funny how things turn out...
I had always thought , the guy who's playing the lead villian in X-men 2 woulda been perfect for Doc Ock, but oh well.
Now that he's in that, he cant do both.

xoxoxo,
