Woooooooooo

who else loves how some patron saints were kiled

or "martyr"

Woo
saint Agatha
"Agatha lived a life consecrated to God. When Decius announced the edicts against Christians, the magistrate Quinctianus tried to profit by Agatha's sanctity; he planned to blackmail her into sex in exchange for not charging her. Handed over to a brothel, she refused to accept customers. After rejecting Quinctianus' advances, she was beaten, imprisoned, tortured, her breasts were crushed and cut off. She told the judge, "Cruel man"

for ten years i've adorned the medal of Saint Catherine
of Siena, Patron Saint of Italy , ....and anorexics.
she died a Karen Carpenter death at age 33 (just like
Jesus!) the really kooky part of her starvation was that
she was still consuming the host (that REALLY IS the
body of Christ for all you Protestants who don't believe
in transubstantiation) ;) don't think for a minute i take
any of it seriously but it sure is fascinating, hmmmm

In reference to St. Catherine of Siena, well, I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss the "holy anorexia". Besides, they have her head on display in the Cathedral there. . . it's really freaky looking.

Of course, I have a thing for reliquaries, so hagiographies (lives of the saints) are the next logical step.

For example:

St. Agnes was martyred because she also refused sexual advances.

St. Dymphna, patroness of the mentally ill, was killed by her father who, in a fit of madness, thought she was her dead mother (icky - incest AND necrophilia) and tried to have sex with her. She was beheaded when she refused.

I am also fascinated by what an old book of my father's identifies as The Incorruptibles - that is saints, like St. Catherine of Bologna, whose bodies did not decompose AND are on display to this very day. They have St. Catherine sitting on a throne at the church in Bologna; her skin has been darkened over the years from candle smoke, but she's still there and, from what I hear, amazingly lifelike and smelling of roses.

I think it's from all the preservatives in the boatload of twinkies she ate on a daily basis.

What many saints underwnet in death to preserve them (quite possibly St. Catherine as well) is the conversion of the body to adipocere, or "Mortuary wax"--a substance that resembles, and can be used as, soap.

If you go to http://adipocere.homestead.com/images.html
http://adipocere.homestead.com/images.html
and scroll down, you can see a picture of a little girl that died in 1902; she looks as though she only sleeps, even now--the picture is from 1995.

Another site of interest might be the catacombs in Palermo, Italy; there are extensive catacombs in Italy and France that people can tour--they used to prop up bodies in these catacombs, which would then mummify or turn to adicopere.

A good site for reference is http://members.tripod.com/~Motomom/index-3.html http://members.tripod.com/~Motomom/index-3.html

The superstition of a Saint's body not degenerating stems from the very natural process of a body turning into wax or soap under ideal conditions; some saints, whose bodies had finally begun to degrade after centuries, are cared for by the addition of new wax where the body's wax has degenerated or fallen off--so some corpses on display which are reported to be the undecayed body may actually be mostly wax museum grade wax, and not the original adicopere.

is anyone else disturbed by the fact that people are going around sniffing a 540 year old corpse?
