Sometimes, if it's a nice supermarket, I just wander around a few minutes, looking at all the food and getting ideas.
I'm not sure if they have them in the NY area, but Wegman's in NJ rocks. I can spend a day or two in there.
However, if i'm doing basic food shopping, I'll be happy with a Shop-Rite.

D'Agostinos is good like that. The foods from the "Marketplace"t here are so good. Everything looks pretty and Im simply mesmerized by the walk-in beer refrigerator. Mmmmm....75 kinds of domestic and imported beer.

When I lived in the Bronx, They opened a Waulbaums on Gunhill Rd. Open 24 hours a day. I used to drag my wife there at 2am just to go up and down the aisles without the crowds- had a good selection too!!

I totally agree that Wegman's is a great chain.
Most of the stores i have been to have just about every type of food you can imagine, and an international food court with everything from buffalo wings to a sushi bar.
I was "stranded" in East brunswick NJ for 10 months after 9/11, and i grabbed lunch at the Wegmans there every other day.
even with all that, they aren't that pricey.
I'm pretty sure they are in NJ only
I worked for Foodtown for 8 years from high school thru college and they sucked compared to Wegmans.

I work in a grocery store down here in Maryland...got any questions? ask away....
The best time to get sale stuff is early sunday morning, cause weve just put the stuff up on the ends, its all packed out, and you dont have to worry about it being sold out.
In my experience the best time to come in is prolly around 9:30, 10:00 at night..cause most people are at home around that time and all the old people have gone to bed

i used to work at a waldbaums in fresh meadows. i worked there for 2 reasons.
1) To piss off customers
2) To watch parents beat the shit out of their kids after they ask for Count Dracula
i worked the register on sundays only(time and a half kiks ass) and the rest of the week i was the price clerk, i set the prices for every thing in the store. the combination of those two jobs allowed me to steal like nobody's business. and every week during the summer i walked out of their with an extra $200 in addition to my check.

Most of my food is from Stop and Shop and Pathmark. Most of my lunch will usually be fresh from the Deli or Bagel store, though.

Although the bulk of my shopping is done at Waldbaums because it is around the corner, I go to the Fairway in Plainview about once a month to get all the things that one can not get at a Waldbaums or Stop & Shop. I find that Fairway has a large variety of things (meats, cheeses, olives, spices, imported sodas etc etc etc) that you find at places like Citarella or Dean and Deluca, but at much better prices. They also often have cheap beer! I also stop at Trader Joes a few times a month just to see what they have (they get lots of kooky things I don't see elsewhere), and at the "oriental grocery" (that's what they call it) about two-three times a week for stuff like frozen dumplings, wontons, pork buns, fresh chow-fun etc and fresh herbs (why pay $2.99 at waldbaums for a bunch of bland, sweet basil when you can get a bunch of holy basil for $.95 at the asian market?)
I used to live one block away from the uptown Fairway and I miss it so much! It's hard when most of your food comes from Waldbaums :(

Fairway,Wegmans in Allentown ,are both excellent. My all-time favorite, STEW LEONARDS. I found out that they opened a N.Y. branch off rt 87, just north of the city. Where do you get off? Stew Leonard Drive, of course.

I usually shop at Stop N' Shop for everyday necessities. I go up into the "snooty" mountains of Watchung where the elite people are and shop at King's. It's outrageously expensive but they have a fine selection of meats, cheeses and international items.
<img src=http://hometown.aol.com/lqqieee/effmenew.gif>
When I lived in CT, I went to the Super Stop & Shop in my town.
Since I've been in DC, I go to the "Social Safeway" in Georgetown. Some of their generic stuff is actually better than the brand-name stuff.

Eh, I don't see star market being significantly different from Waldbaums...
Ari, the big freezer at Fairway is the best! And it's the only place on the upper west side that I have ever found non-homogenized milk (the BEST).

i love ginardis (sp) in the main line area of philly when i was there, greatest supermarket ever... a bit snooty, but as supermarkets go it rocks the mic.... for specialty items i like PASTOSA in the nyc area, where i live, great italian specialties, huge international cheese selcetion, and muxh lower prices than any of the manhattan places like gracies market or dean and delucca or zabars....i was quite happy upon finding that place

I work 9pm-4am Saturday nights now, and its so great having no customers in the store that get in the way, can't control their screaming kids, and ask stupid questions. Its real quiet, you can mess around on the intercoms, and you have a whole lot of time to yourself to think...i love it..
i do this sometimes, too. the best thing is when they have those do-it-yourself check out things. they're so much fun! you get to ring up all your items, pay, and bag them yourself!!! it's super fun, i recommend it to anyone who's yet to experience it
i HATE those things! not only do they take away peoples jobs, but you always get idiots in front of you that take FOREVER to bag their stuff and you get your groceries all mixed up with theirs

That was more towards King Hippo since he works in the area where they have the stores.
Give him another option in case he may wanna try it.
Yeah and nobody ever posts about anything that they don't like.
Nobody ever says " Hey did you see that movie/play that game/listen to this CD. I think it sucks. " right ?
I forgot that all posts had to be positive.
The fuckin' thread title is " Supermarket Thread " not " Supermarket's That You Only Have A Glowing Review About Thread ".
Better question is why post about what I posted if you didn't have anything to actually say about the thread.
At least my post mentioned a supermarket.
I try to avoid going into threads and just commenting on, correction criticizing, other's posts but to each his own.
