CHICAGO (Feb. 17) - Hundreds of screaming guests rushed the exits of a crowded nightclub Monday after security guards used a chemical spray to quell a fight, and at least 21 people were crushed to death or smothered in the panic, officials and witnesses said.

Firefighters responding to the scene found a number of locked or blocked doors and used sledgehammers and pry bars to open some of them so that people could be rescued, Fire Commissioner James Joyce said at a late morning briefing.

``There are people trying to get out that could not get out,'' Joyce said. ``Locked and blocked doors are a contributing factor. We can't explain how management or ownership would allow that.''

The locked doors are a fire code violation, Joyce said.

yikes. i wonder who's going to get raked over the coals for this? the security guards for using the pepper spray or the club for having all those exits locked?

I still don't get why security guards use pepper spray/mace in clubs or at concerts. I've been sprayed four seperate times at four seperate shows, and each time I've been a good 20-50 feet away from the incident that required the spraying. If there's strong AC in the club, or even a slight breeze at an outdoor show, it picks up the spray and dumps it on everyone in a good 50-100 foot radius. People panic, don't know what's going on, and everything goes to hell. At two of the shows I got sprayed I was at a stadium concert, and had to start hauling people up and over the walls into the stands because the two tiny stairs were clogged and people were passing out and getting smashed. It looked like a friggin' war zone...

In the article it quotes on clubgoer as saying it was only for two girls fighting. do you really need pepper spray for two girls fighting?

That explains a lot.

Maybe...but I still find the fact that you said each time was just you "marking your territory" to be very offensive and insensitive...

Have u ever tried to get between 2 girls intent on fighting? The likelyhood of getting injured goes up a percentage when its a catfight.

I like how the word stampede is in the headline. It kind of dehumanizes the whole thing.

in the end the management will take the fall for this one. sure the bouncers are the ones who used th pepper spray, but it was the management that set it as a means of dispersing a fight. its also managements fault for the doors being locked. since everyone is looking for someone to take responsibility i wouldnt be surprised if the owner or management is charged or even convicted of involentary manslaughter. then there is the civil suits...

Everything about this situation makes me want to vomit. I hope the owners of the club burn in hell, and I hope the idiots who illegally packed themselves into the 2nd floor of a club repeatedly cited for wrong-doing learn a valuable lesson. Don't put yourself into a situation you know you can't get out of if shit hits the fan. Imagine if there was a fire...they'd all be fucking charcoal briquettes right now.

Oh good: Reverend Jackson is involved now. That'll make everything better.

And, after 35 years, Jackson STILL has to milk MLK's murder for all its worth:

"I've known Dwain since he was a child. On Dr. King's very last day of his life, we were on the way to Rev. Kyles' home for dinner..."

Christhecop...I don't know whether to laugh in jest if you are making a joke...or you are serious?

In my opinion, if it's a joke..it's funny...I chuckled. But if you are being faciscious, then that's a whole different story.

And I realize this is off topic, But I felt like commenting on it.

Was there any ass-grabbing?

On a serious note: At my work we have safety meetings all the time. One thing that the Fire Warden said was when you walk in to a room, ANY room, a restaurant, a club, ect...ALWAYS look where the exits are. Think ahead about what exit would be best for you. Many times in a situation, people try to go to the door where they came in. This is BAD because another door may be closer. Be careful out there you drunk crazy kids!!!

I just heard people are trying to place blame on the mayor and police department because even though the club was ordered closed months prior, the police should have known they were operating illegally.

10 Dead, 100 Hurt in Huge R.I. Club Fire

WEST WARWICK, R.I. - A huge fire engulfed a Rhode Island nightclub during a rock concert's pyrotechnics display, causing at least 10 deaths and 100 injuries, authorities said.

Fire Capt. Russell McGillivray said an estimated 10 to 20 people died. He said many of the victims were found in the front door area after they apparently frantically rushed to the exits. More were possibly trapped inside.

This is pretty fucked up. The local news was doing a piece on the band that was playing (Great White) and caught the start of the fire on camera. Stupid fucking pyro set the place a blaze.

This tragedy was very avoidable. Sure, the band used Pyro in a very small space, and yes that was stupid but... HAVE YOU SEEN THAT TAPE?!
The Bassist on Stage-right is literally standing there watching the blaze begin! What the fuck is that all about? He could've made an announcement, or at the very least, stopped playin and tell the rest of the band! Sure, the audience might have (stupidly) thought the fire was part of the show, but the Bassist knew some serious shit was going down!
You can see people in the audience trying to signal the Singer (trying to get him to turn around). Again... when there's a fire, you're supposed to look for the exit!
No sprinklers in a public place? What the hell is that all about? The warehouse where I keep my old furniture has a sprinkler!!

I blame the venue. No sprinklers?! No fire-alarms?! Sounds like the owner tried to save a few bucks. Enjoy your lawsuit...assshead!

I know before WWE shows somebody goes out and checks the pyro before the show to make sure no one will get hit by anything...did they have anyone there to make sure the pyro was going to be used safely? what a mess...
