Preppie Killer Readies For Valentine's Day Release
NEW YORK, 10:18 a.m. EST February 13, 2003 - Robert Chambers, the man known as the "Preppie Killer" for his confessed role in the murder of an 18-year-old girl, would like to complete college and counsel prisoners after he is released from jail on Friday.
"He wants to finish college and get a job," Monsignor Thomas Leonard, Chambers' priest, said. "He would like to work as a counselor in a federal program for prisoners."
Chambers, 36, will leave an upstate prison on Valentine's Day after serving the maximum time on his manslaughter conviction for killing Jennifer Levin during a sexual encounter on Aug. 26, 1986.
Since going to jail in April 1998, Chambers, a college dropout, has racked up a number of violations behind bars, including heroin possession, assaulting a guard, and weapon possession. He spent a third of his time in solitary confinement and was rejected for parole five times.
As a result of pleading no contest in a $25 million wrongful death lawsuit filed by Levin's parents, Chambers will have to pay them any lump sum payments he earns and 10 percent of his wages, Chambers' lawyer, Brian O'Dwyer, said.
Levin's sister, Danielle Roberts, has said she was "haunted by a feeling of dread" over Chambers' departure from the Auburn Correctional Facility.
The priest said Chambers was happy, but nervous, about his imminent release.
"He's happy, but he's also apprehensive about how he's going to adjust to life out of prison," Leonard said.
Chambers, who was living on Manhattan's Upper East Side at the time of the murder, plans to live outside of New York City upon his release from jail, Leonard said.
