Japan to initiate 'pre-emptive' strikes

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan would launch a military strike against North Korea if it had firm evidence that the Stalinist state was ready to attack with ballistic missiles, Japanese Defense Minister Shigeru Ishiba said Thursday.



"It is too late if (a missile) flies toward Japan," Ishiba told Reuters in an interview.


"Our nation will use military force as a self-defense measure if (North Korea) starts to resort to arms against Japan," he said, adding that Japan could regard the process of injecting fuel into a missile as the start of military attack if it determined that the missile was pointed at Japan.


Ishiba said that Japan would only attack North Korea as a clearly defensive measure. "We differentiate this from the concept of a 'pre-emptive strike'," he said.


Japan's postwar constitution bans war as a means to settle international disputes, but that has been interpreted to mean the nation's military must be restricted to self-defense.

I don' think we have too much to worry about concerning North Korea, because China loves the influx of it's slave labor capital, and it's not going to let it's little satelitte neighbor fuck things up for them. I don't remember off hand...but wasn't it part of the treaties after WWII that Japan would not hold a military due to US protection? (I'm pretty sure on that part) But Since when did Japan get a military and one with capabilities to bomb?

Yeah, their US-drafted constitution specifically prohibits them from fielding an offensive force. They have begun to blur the lines recently, like chasing (and firing on) supposed NK smugglers and spy ships from Japanese waters. I was part of a military exercise with the JDF a few years ago, and although they are very defense-oriented, they were quite interested in how the US performed offensive operations.

japan's military is very small. the strict restrictions that were in the treaty have been partially lifted. for example if, i remember right, n korea decided to attack japan, japan's small military would be the first defensive line. the u.s. would then provide support.

Korea is a problem, but if they would've shut their mouths i'm sure they could've all escaped alive. Japan apparnetly wants to be the only country bombed with nuclear weapons.
