View Full Version : Howard "Doesnt Care"

For those who missed Stern this morning. He said that in NY the question he is getting asked the most is what is going to happen to WNEW? And he said frankly he doesn't really care. Which would go against a ton of posts on this board (if he is telling the truth). He said he asked Mel, saying " Steve is a good programmer he should do a good job".. Mel then said "Steve could program This!! I just want it to finally make some money!!"
Sounds like management talk for sure. Can't blame him for wanting to make his product profitable. But if Howard asked Mel, I guess he does care a little bit.

The King is dead. Howard's show is so unspeakably lame, it's hard sometimes to remember how brilliant it was. I have about 100 hours of Stern shows between 89 and 93 on cassette tape, and it was truly something special. But now we hear the mundane queries of Grade Z celebrities. Do I really care if Jolene Blalock does anal? Apparently Howard doesn't, to see him ask the question on his E! show. I do miss the old king, he was something to see, but when he lost his jesters and his queen(billy, jackie and Allison), the kingdom fell at his feet. He's the quintessential tragic hero. To listen to what he mocked and see how totally he's become what he once decried, is as stunning as it is sad. Here's a sentence I never thought I'd write 1, 5, 10 or 20 years ago: Fuck Howard Stern. I will only take that back if Ron and Fez show up on K-Rock in New York, where their presence makes too much sense. Until then, he can rot in hell. The man who once ran to the fight and competition now cowers from it, and it's not even direct. I won't listen to Stern until Ron and Fez are back. I only hope I get a diary from Arbitron and I write in SU for my listening habits.

Truer words were never spoken. What Howie thinks concerns me about as much as feline leukemia concerns my dog.
I'm a recent transplant to the area from Louisiana, so I didn't have the opportunity to listen to him back in his heyday. But, what I hear now sucks.

Howard's downfall really started when he put the "gag order" on WNEW, not to talk about him. He went from my radio hero...to hypocrite.

Why should he care? He never even heard of Ron and Fez suppoesdly. He always thought they were like O&A, ripping him off (Hoo Hoo Robin). He makes the most money for Infinity. He only cares about himself. I like Ron and Fez but besides a small following, they are a small blip on Howard's radar screen.

Nature Boy summed things up real well. Stern was once great.. I grew up listening to Stern.. and the show probably peaked a long time ago. Once I found Ron & Fez, Stern just didnt seem that appealing anymore. With the right exposure, R&F could be just as (if not more)successful.

some people on this board think that calling howard and begging for help will help get ron and fez back in NY but the truth being why would he care. It doesn't make any sense for him to support anyone, he has his fans nation wide and he has nothing to prove by supporting another radio show

Howard's still funny. Admit it people, you laugh a decent amount when you listen to his show. He's not as good as he used to be sure, but you still like Lou Reed, right?

I would tend to agree with the last post. Yes, he is not as funny as old times. (Although I am only 22 and don't know the real good old times). But he is still a very unique product (especially these days) and I still get a chuckle from the outrageous stuff he'll ask guests even though it is repetitive. And "Stump the Booie," a rather new bit is pretty good too. And what else is there to watch at 11 at night after you have seen every Seinfeld episode 13 times??

Stern cares. That's total b.s. He wants to be the only FM talk radio personality in NY for Infinity. He knows full well that it gives him tremendous leverage over the company.
Oh, and don't believe the "I'm going to retire" routine. Without his radio show, there's no big paydays, no model girlfriend, no house out in the Hamptons. And, most importantly no more celebrity status for him.

The Nature Boy really did hit the nail on the head. Billy West was Da Man when he was on! The show was soo funny back then. When Billy left, that was the beginning of the end. The show was still good, but not "piss pants" funny. Then the separation-divorce happened. Man, did that year or so suck! They were just startin' to get some of the spark back when Jackie left and that was it. I'll admit, that it has gotten a little better lately, but not much. I just like it when they talk to each other and the news is still pretty good. The wack pack has been terrible. Hank and Crackhead Bob were funny for a minute. Beetlejuice was NEVER funny, and I'm glad dumbass media whore Jessica Hahn is long gone.
Bottom line - I turn it on when the news starts and that's it.

I not saying Howard didn't bash WNEW in the back behind closed doors, about how O&A or Ron and Fez rip of his show. But he did address it(WNEW format change) because the fans who see him on the street do care and ask him about whats going on. I heard the show this morning and it seems that Howard has no control on other stations besides KROC he probally doesn't even have that. Mel runs the show he runs the friggin company. I'm sick and tried of people bashing Howard yes he does have a HUGE EGO but he isn't the reason WNEW went under. Just like any business if your not making money you got to change something its just to bad Ron and Fez had to suffer though this its not like they been here before.

I agree. Howard's been a has been to me since 95. WHen he started having lesbians on almost every second of the show and doing nothing creative otherwise, it just became the same show everyday. Who wants to listen to that monotony?

Howard sucks. He
fakes all
of his live calls anyway. Ever
notice the same 6 people
keep getting through? They
have a private phone # and
they don't even bother
answering the main
number. He doesn't do his
show for the listeners, he
does it for himself.

Stern was good when he was married, and everyone could relate to his pain.

Now all he talks about is banging his 29 year old girlfriend, eating at Nobu and flying away on weekend retreats to the Hamptons for celeb parties, which, ahh, no one can relate to.

He will never retire, because without that show he is nothing. And we all know super models don't date nothings.

He is so out of touch with what's hip, he makes an ass of himself daily, and well, you know what O and A would whip his ass just because he is like 50 and out of the loop.

Dunno if we will ever see that though... Only time..

Um, we were supposed to like Lou Reed? Shit, must've missed out on that meeting...
ANd I still don't give a shit about Stern. Then again, his show isn't even syndicated here, so why should I care?

The only thing Howard is guilty of is insulating himself in an industry that wishes to keep him happy, while planning his next replacement. If he didn't have the gag order, O&A, Don & Mike, Tom Lykis, and the rest of the Infinity Stable of Half Wits would have have used their shows as forums to take their shots at the (self-titled) king. This was proven back when O&A were still broadcasting, and the gag was briefly lifted.

Howard **is not** nearly as funny as he used to be,
But he **is** still entertaining,
Especially considering the alternative, ie: nothing even
remotely funny in the AM drive in NYC.
Except, of course, the Chick, who is off by 9:00am.
But back to topic, no way Howard cares about WNEW.
He only cared about the attention O&A were getting.
Ron&Fez don't even exist to him.

howard really stinks now,..the only reason i listen at all is b/c artie is kinda funny.. but howard definately lost it, both his edge and his persona... he does a tired show...a fraction of the excitment generated by even the most ordinary o and a or ron and fez show....his ego is out of control in inverse proportion to his ratings...ahoohoo... he sucks...so does ny radio.. if only i knew where to burn old ron and fez shows...

I'm in the minority, I know.
I think Howard is just as good as always. If he did put a gag order on other shows I completely understand it. Imagine doing your job, and someone comes along and starts doing the same job you're doing and badmouthing you. Wouldn't you do everything in your power to stop it??? If you say no, you're fooling yourself.

Ask Mr. Imus. Howard has been HORRIBLE to him. He would literally go on for a half hour at a time and I never heard Imus say a bad thing about him.
Or what about David Letterman? He carries more clout at Viacom than Stern does. I'm sure he could have shut Howard up if he tried, and Stern ripped him apart on a regular basis.
Howard is the worst type of insecure asshole. He dishes it out by the truckload but he CAN'T take it.

Remember when Howard went in to the LA market against Mark and Brian? He (correctly) bashed them for their lame antics. I particularly remember him bashing them for some TV show they had, and how every skit or bit revolved around them doing gay stuff to each other. Howard then said (and I'm paraphrasing here) "Where does it say in the radio handbook that you must do gay stuff to get ratings?" He went off on how everyone is now doing homo bits, thinking they're funny, but they're not.
Fast forward to Howard bringing the Goo-Goo Dolls into the studio to sing that sappy ballad while gay men dressed in sailor suits made out on the dance floor...High-Pitch Eric getting spanked by Howard...the list goes on.
Yes, Howard is the most entertaining thing on NY drivetime radio now that Ferrall is gone (although the blues in the morning on WFDU is fast overtaking Howie in my car). But to say that he is better than ever, to say he hasn't become a caricature of himself is to be blind.
And while I haven't followed R&F for a decade, I suspect, from what I've heard, Ron hasn't decayed at all (Fezzie, of course, is past his prime). Shows what happens when you stay hungry, I guess.

I started listening when I was a kid (to Howard) back in 83 when he was on W-Ehhhhhn-BC. I followed him over to K-Rock and he was my god for many years. I was heartbroken when Billy West left the show.
Right around the time of his movie, I really hated the changes I noticed that were the result of his growing power & stardom. He used to make us all feel like he was on the outside of the "in-crowd" with the rest of us.
Now he's literally in with the in-crowd and a lot of us felt left out. The divorce just made it worse.
I still listen sometimes, and I even think he can be really funny sometimes, but it will never be the same.
Kinda like watching Metallica & Chili Peppers sell themselves out with their new, sugar coated radio friendly music.
Anyway, I hope we get Ron & Fez back. At least I know they're still on the outside looking in with me. Know what I mean?

The Imus show was basically a "Zoo" type format. He had to play records between his bits. Face it, Imus was wacky morning man. He did a skit about Moby Worm and how it would eat a different high school everyday.
How do I know this??? I actually heard the Imus show before Howard was even in NY. The same type of crap Imus did is still being done on Z100 every morning.
Imus didn't know what to do on radio, until Howard came along.
Whether you like Howard or not, you have to admit that he did change radio and in some instances tv also.

Fuck Howard!!...For years all i heard was that Howard was the K.O.A.M....I heard Howard take on Dibella,Imus etc. with glee and vow he'd be no.1 in their market and have mock funerals when he won. That was then..this is now..Howard sucks period!..Part of being "The King!" is taking on all challengers not putting gag orders on your perceived competition..He's become the very thing he used to ridicule in others...I used to be a big fan but I can't listen to that show anymore..There's no effort anymore to make the show funny, there's hardly anymore comedic skits nothing...When he lost his wife, billy, jackie ...he lost his sense of humor too..

Yes, Howard is the most entertaining thing on NY drivetime radio now that Ferrall is gone
Alot of people felt the same way. Ferrall's ratings were consistantly rising. His show was terrific for a shlock/sports show. I think Howard was threatened by this "upstart" morning man and had the company drug test Ferrall. (pure speculation but I wouldn't put it past that big bird bastard)

Howard has taken on all competitors in the past but he never took on o/a so that argument doesn't hold weight. Howard had his day in the sun but like a fighter who stays in the ring too long he picks and chooses whom his opponent will be instead of being a TRUE warrior and facing O/A head on..True sign of a coward!!

What a fucking tool.. Oh and that quote was from 1995 or so. The supposed King of ALL MEDIA. Whoo oohhh..
