View Full Version : Weighty Words
I recently started working out again, and I pulled out the owner's manual to my weight bench. It's made by Joe Weider, who puts out tons of exercise equipment and who runs fitness and bodybuilding competitions. On the front of the manual Mr. Weider puts his personal motto and I found it to be quite profound:
Strive for excellence, exceed yourself, love your friends, speak the truth, practice fidelity, and honor your father and mother. These principles will help you master yourself, make you strong, give you hope and put you on the path to greatness.
What words of wisdom do you look to for inspiration?

"Time has told me
You're a rare, rare find
A troubled cure
For a troubled mind...
Time has told me
Not to ask for more
For someday our ocean
Will find it's shore."
-- Nick Drake

[center]The Serenity Prayer
God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,Courage to change the things I can, and Wisdom to know the difference.[center]
I say this to myself whenever I'm sick of my life, whenever I'm angry, or scared, or unsure of how to proceed.
I sometimes lack wisdom, and tend to rely on courage more than serenity. However, I've learned to quietly accept things over time, and realize that some things are beyond my control.

Here are a few that have inspired me:
"To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others; to leave the world a little better; whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is the meaning of success."
-Ralph Waldo Emerson
"No one can make you feel inferior without your consent."
-Eleanor Roosevelt
"It's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog."
- Mark Twain
"The great pleasure in life is doing what people say you cannot do."
- Walter Bagehot
"The content of a man's character, is not where he stands in times of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy."
-Martin Luther King Jr.
"I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I --
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference."
-Robert Frost
"Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, ambition inspired, and success achieved."
- Helen Keller

Similar to GVAC, I found mine in a place I wasnt expecting it. Words of wisdom from Dennis Leary:
"I'm just not happy. I'm just not happy because my life didn't turn out the way I thought it would."
Hey, join the fucking club, okay? I thought I was going to be the starting center fielder for the Boston Red Sox. Life sucks, get a fucking helmet.
I'm not happy, I'm not happy Nobody's happy! Happiness comes in small doses, folks, it's a cigarette or a chocolate chip cookie or a five-second orgasm and that's it, okay? You come, you eat the cookie, you smoke the butt, you go to sleep and you get up in the morning and you go to fucking work, okay? That is it, end of fucking list
Those words really woke me up at the right point in my life, and I think about them whenever I'm feeling like crap, and move on.

There was a quote that I heard in of ALL places the Sonny Bono - Behind The Music. He said "If you believe in your dreams, You can make it happen" That was just so touching to me and I think of that whenever I think I can do nothing right or that I will fail.

"Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence.
As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons.
Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to the dull and ignorant;
they too have their story . . ."
