Johneewadd - Way before Homo Sapiens, and even Homo Errectus and Ergaster probably around the time of the early robust Austolipithicus, society has been divided among gender lines. Men were the hunters and women were the gatherers. It made sense to do it that way. A nursing woman couldn't travel far from her baby to join a hunt, nor could she focus on the hunt if she took her infant with her. Gathering roots, nuts and berries (and fish) near camp allowed them to stay with their infants and physically nurture them.

The funny thing is that there is an image of men as the "big hunter" and women as the "meak little gatherer." In actuality, the gathering activities of the women accounted for 90-95% of our ancestors (and later our) early diet. The women could have done without the men hunting, but the men couldn't do without the women gathering.

BTW, there's a very interesting archeological site called FLK-1, which gives strong evidence that early man was not a hunter at all, but a scavenger. The knives and tools were used to sever the flesh off animals that were already dead before a bigger predator could come along.

Finally, the technical term for our species IS Homo Sapiens Sapiens. Since we're the last in the genus of Homo, we simply refer to ourselves as homo sapiens, without the need to diffrentiate ourselves from earlier ancestors.
