The NBA players' association and the league have agreed to expand the first round of the playoffs to a best-of-7 format starting this season.

I think this was done to help the Lakers. The NBA loves them somethin' awful and knows that they will get beat in a best of 5 but can win in a best of 7.

and the bullshit of the league continues to favor the lakers.
But if you look further this could also hurt the lakers. They have played pretty much an extra season the last 3 years with playoff games included. So extending the playoffs gives the lakers more games to play which makes them more tired for the finals if they get there. Plus if the lakers dont get above 5th seed then they have no series where they are the home team. This also hurts the lakers because if they play say San Antonio then the lakers would only have to win game 1 or 2 at S.A. to have the advantage because S.A. would have to win one to take the series back for a game 5. Extending the series doesnt give the lakers that extra bonus
Bottom line is its about the money and micheal jordan playing in a game 7 in the first round for a potential carrer elimination will draw huge ratings for ABC/ESPN/TNT--and i wouldnt doubt ABC's money had something to do with this since they just got the rights from NBC this year

Good theory. The NBA is becoming more corrupt than the Bush Administration.

As if best of 5 didnt last long enough. All sports playoffs should be like football, you get one game to prove your the best, not 5 or 7.
Man, I'm a funny guy.

And so David Stern tries to squeeze even more money from attendance and TV revenues.

People need to stop thinking the Lakers in the playoffs is a gimme. There is no guarantee that they will make it. They are one game over .500 at the All Star Break. I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't make it

In their last 20 games, they have only 3 or 4 losses. They will definitely be in the playoffs. This just sucks now for Dallas and/or Sacramento who would have a chance in 5 now they have no shot most likely in 7.
