Mrs. Impact and I went bowling the other day and it started me to thinking, Without spare and strike bonuses added in, the perfect bowling score would be 100 Right? 10 pins, ten frames. Now with strikes and spares it's 300. But how exactly are they calculated? I hit three strikes and four spares but only scored a 158. Can anyone explain how this system works?

If you don't count the bonuses (SP) it the best score would be 120.
10 frames but in the 10 if you get a strike you get 2 more balls. 12 x 10 = 120

Scoring in bowling is pretty easy.

If you don't throw a spare or a strike you add the value of the 2 balls thrown

If you get a spare you get 10 pts plus the value of the next ball thrown.

If you get a strike it is 10pts plus the value of the next 2 balls thrown.
/ = spare
X = strike

ex 7 2 score = 9 1st frame
ex 7 / 7 score = 17 1st frame
ex X 7 2 score = 19 1st frame 28 second frame
ex 7 / x = 20 1st frame (20 + score of next 2 balls) for 2nd frame
ex X X X = score 1st frame 30 pts 10 plus 10 plus 10.

So for a 300 game you keep adding the pts
30 60 90 120 150 180 210 240 260 300

It's been a while since I've tried to explain it to anyone, so bear with me

The basics are that you score a 10 for a STRIKE, PLUS the number of pins knocked down with the "next two balls you roll". (NOT the next two FRAMES, the next two BALLS, which confuses a lot of people)

So if you roll a strike in the first frame (10), then ANOTHER strike in the second (10), and then 7 on the first roll in the third frame, your score for the FIRST frame is 27.

So now you have a STRIKE in the second (10), and then that 7 from your first ball in the 3rd, and lets say you go on and pick up the spare in the 3rd. (3 more). Your score for the SECOND frame is now 20, plus the 27 from the first, so after two frames your TOTAL score is 47.

Now with that SPARE, you score 10 PLUS just the next ball. So now in the fourth, you knock down just 3 on your first roll, so your score for the third frame is 13, for a total of 60.

So you've got 3 down in the the fourth, and on your next ball you only get 5 more, leaving 2, so your score for the 4th is 8, for a total of 68.

And so on.

This Spare/Strike scoring ALSO includes the tenth frame, so if you get a STRIKE in the tenth, you still get to roll two more balls, or one more if you had gotten a SPARE in the tenth.

SO... the reason 300 is a perfect game is because if you get all strikes, you score 30 for each frame. (10 plus your next two balls)

Thank God for automatic scoring, huh?

my buddy bowled a 299 he said the last ball he was so friggin scared. Everyone in the house stops and watches you bowl. He was saying to himself "Don't throw a gutterball".

bob bob bob...your missing the entire point of bowling altogether..Its not to hit those pins, but to guzzle watery beers that taste like an ashtray, and eating onion rings that are partially still frozen. Dont forget listening to 20 year old songs from a Juke box with one speaker working - waaayy too loud. Its also culturally imprtant for its fasion. More spandex, polyester and plaids are witnessed and imitated by fasion designers at the bowling alley than on Madison avenue.

Bowling is a cool game to play although you are right, the scoring could be tough to follow, ESPECIALLY! when the computerized scorers mess up...they could be a real pain!

I bowled in a League one year when I was 19 at Hudson Lanes in Bayonne... I bowled for St Francis Hospital and we won the Championship that year... We got a big trophie and 350.00 in cash apiece... I had a 156 avg.

Haven't bowled in a league since but have since bought my first bowling ball...it's nice and shiny and purple, oh yeah, and dusty!
