SCARBOROUGH, Ontario (Ticker) - The New York Rangers reportedly fired first-year coach Bryan Trottier on Wednesday after three dismal losses dropped the team with the NHL's highest payroll to 11th place in the Eastern Conference.

No successor was named, according to the web site of Sportsnet of Canada, which cited no sources in its report. Both of Trottier's assistants - Jim Schoenfeld and Terry O'Reilly - have NHL coaching experience.

This is why those ass clowns suck. They load up the payroll with overpriced players on the downhill side of their career and expect immediate results. With a few exceptions, they never give the younger players a chance to develop at the NHL level before trading them. Trottier didn't get a fair chance. He should have gotten at least 2 seasons before they canned him. They would be wise to put Jim Schoenfeld in charge but that organization is so inept that they won't do it. Either way, it doesn't matter to me. I'm a Devils fan. They could put Deb Kaufman behind the bench for all I care.

Honestly, they should fold their fucking franchise. With a team that damn talented on paper there's no way they shouldn't be in 1st place. I however, am currently happy with the whole situation because as a die-hard Devils fan any misery the Rangers endure is complete bliss for me. LET'S GO DEVILS!!!

The only thing I can say is that being a Devils fan has its priviledges. Watching the devils in first place & watching a team with the highest payroll fired their head coach.

Look on the bright side, now they have extra cash for a high priced loser than doesnt fit in any line and would further push the team into ridicule.

Even though I am a die hard Islander fan, I still knew that hiring Trottier was a big mistake for the Rangers. He had zero head coaching experience. The Rangers are a win now team. Why bring in a rookie coach to lead them? I thought that they would at least wait until the All-Star break. The Rangers suck balls. Let's Go Islanders!!!!!! <P>

I couldn't agree with you more. I'd just add that he was the fan fav at the time of the trade. Instead they receive a figure skater named Poti who doesn't know how to play defense. He went to the Sandis Ozolinsh School of Defense with his -15 status. All-Star my ass.

Where I do disagree with you is the NJ point. They have two titles and three trips to the finals in the last 8 years. Most franchises would die for this, let alone being in the playoffs every year too. The playoffs are where most teams finally get their teams in the black financially, yet the Devils never seem to spend it. The team will die if Brodeur ever gets hurt, or leaves. He is their backbone and system.

He did it through the draft back then, a different era in sports. My question is why does he continue to trade away his talent? Why doesn't he focus on the draft and form his team, the way he did in Edmonton?
He has lost focus in the era of free agency and high priced talent by being pressured to win now with an old team. So he gets swept up in the NY way of late in sports, buy a team. In hockey, it isn't that simple. The Rangers no longer have home grown talent (and don't say Blackburn, he's already lost his spot to another acquistion) and refuse to develop talent. Also, in hockey grit players are extremely valuble and McCarthy and Barnaby don't cut it. There team is thrown together like an all-star team and it plays that way with terrible defense, lack of unity, egos like no other team. A team must have a strong backbone for free agency to work, like in Dallas, Colorado and Detroit. They have great loyal captains and leadership from all positions that the additions must fall in line with. The Rangers throw them together constantly changing the face and structure of the team.
