in there early days Green Day was not a band you would openly laugh at, too bad it didnt last
I laughed then, and I'll laugh now.
I'll go newer (mostly currently touring), punk bands, mostly excluding hardcore, all my opinion, and trying to add new bands without repeating.
AFI (My personal favorite, although the new album sounds AWFUL)
Bad Religion (Posthumous addition, inducted for work they did before the band started to SUCK)
Blitz (warriors.)
Bouncing Souls (See Bad Religion)
Death by Stereo (If looks could kill.)
Dropkick Murphys (See Bad Religion)
F-Minus (Inducted because I used to host their web page and/or hung out with them)
Fenix TX (Simply for the Rooster Song)
H20 (Gotta love singing roadies)
Kill your Idols (Live Show)
Millencolin (Swedes are cool now)
Nausea(See F-Minus)
No Fun at All (Because fluffernutter loves `em and refuses to write a list, see also Millencolin)
Pennywise (See Bad Religion)
Rancid (Awww, COME ONE! I ran rancid.net for two years)
Rise Against (Fantastic live show)
Rufio (Personal pleasure)
The Distillers (cause I want to marry Casper)
The Nerve Agents (See F-Minus)
The Queers (Do You Ever Shut up? Do You Ever Shut up? Woah!)
The Vandals (I've got an idea for a movie)
US Bombs (You know why.)
That's all I can think of, but as it seems to invariably happen in these threads, someone will mention a band and I'll get all pissed off cause I forgot them.

I'll define "Punk" very broadly and limit my choices to bands I've actually seen live:
The Replacements (early stuff was indeed punk). Live shows amazing hit/miss.
Soul Asylum (early, amazing live)
The Clash
The Ramones
Bad Religion
Sick of It All (pretty hardcore)
New Bomb Turks (great real punk)
Gaunt (excellent)
Seaweed
Misfits
Jawbreaker
Minor Threat/Fugazi (punk?)
Sonic Youth (punk?)
Dinosaur Jr. (my favorite old school band after The Mats and Pavement)
Minutemen (RIP D. Boon)
Meat Puppets (just because)
fLUF (great cover of Redemption Song)
Husker Du
Descendents/All
Bad Brains (AMAZING)
The Jesus Lizard (a favorite)
Shellac (Live at Action Park)
Superchunk (Slack Motherfucker is one of the best songs ever)
Coffin Break
Bullet LaVolta
Op Ivy
Early Lemonheads and Green Day shows were punky. Right before Dookie was released I saw Green Day open for Bad Religion at Irving Plaza and a picture of the back of my head and half of my college roommate's head is on the crowd shot on the back of Dookie, which was taken at the show I went to.
Oh, and honorable mention goes to me for lasting all of 5 minutes at a GG Allin show in Boston in 1985.

Social D all the way, baby!
Saw them last year when the came to NY and Mike Ness still kicks ass.
I also dug the Plugz, who outside of Southern California were probably best known for alot of the backround music in " Repo Man "
Plus their song "Electrify Me" was the theme song to the greatest porno ever "Nu Wave Hookers" .
if the music is good enough for Ginger Lynn and Traci Lords to finger themselves to over the opening credits, then its damn well good enough for me!

I'm going to burn down Hot Topic. They all stare at me when I go in becuase I dress normal now because I'm an adult.
Back in my freak days we didn't have Hot Topics and we had to tough it out and take the train to the east village to get hair dye. It came down to us buying piercing needles to pierce each other O YEA WE WERE BADASS DON'T STARE AT ME HOT TOPIC EMPLOYEES

What's really sad is to live in central bumfuck Virginia,
and Hot Topic is the best thing you've got within a 90
minute drive.
I used to hate the stares, too, but lately I've found it
more amusing than annoying. Especially when I take
my kids with me. I can almost hear them thinking,
"what's that 30-something mother doing here with her
little kids?" and then I think back, "I was punk before
you were even born!" Then the three of us walk out
with matching studded leather bracelets or something.
Fun.

I've seen Superchunk several times and they were awesome. If you don't know the song Slack Motherfucker, please get to know it soon. I have it on MP3 too. That and the song Freak Scene by Dinosaur Jr. are like theme songs to my life circa late 1980's.
I saw the Lemonheads a few times, they were very punk when Ilived in the Boston area, especially when I saw them when they were touring for Creator. Excellent album, amazing punk cover of Suzanne Vega's "Luka."

I'm going to burn down Hot Topic. They all stare at me when I go in becuase I dress normal now because I'm an adult.
C'mon now, you know that you aren't punk enough until you are sporting the tie and a wifebeater. Now excuse me while I go buy ignorant slogan t shirts, so I can get attention.

People wouldn't know punk these days even if it was the punkiest day of their life and they had an electrified punking machine. If you say you're punk, you're not. It's very easy.

Since "best" is a superlative, there can only be one so I gots too go with the original 'blowtorch in bondage', Mr. Blitzodelicness himself and his first incindiary trailblazing band,
Mistah Iggy Pop and the Stooges

It's Ryan Foltz. He plays the mandolin and tin whistle and otherwise fills in. He hasn't been with them since the very beginning or anything but he's been having a blast touring with them the past few years; they're awesome to see live!
