well, it does seem like it was a simple accident, but i'd think that the other guy is responsible. you were just going straight along the sidewalk while he was the one entering it, and merging into the traffic already on the street. i say that it's on him to look and make sure that he can step out without walking into someone who's already there. you should have beaten him

Usually I use the rules of the road on the sidewalk too but this is one exception.
If you are walking down the street and you walk into one of those store doors that open out or bump into someone coming out it is your fault. The doorway and anyone coming out is in your field of vision, you may not always be in the field of the person exiting. The bad thing is that the person was so rude. If you said "excuse me" that should have been acknowledged politely. Next time beat him.
