BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. -- "Gimme a Break!" star Nell Carter, who won an Emmy for playing the sassy, matronly housekeeper on the 1980s sitcom and received a Tony Award in 1978 for her performance in the Broadway musical "Ain't Misbehavin,'" died Thursday, her publicist said. She was 54.
The singer-actress collapsed in her Beverly Hills home and was found by one of her 13-year-old adopted sons, spokesman Roger Lane said.

Wow. What a shame. Geez, I guess they really do go in 3's. Maurice Gibb, Richard Crenna, and now Nell Carter.

I could care less if she ever worked again, but at 54 years old, it is a sad thing. My mom is about that age, makes you think about mortality.
RIP, Nell.

How sad. I keep seeing the image of Joey Lawrence, with that mop head of hair, shouting "Aunt Nell!" As she flings the child unto her ample bosom for comfort. She was indeed a "sassy, matronly" woman. My favorite skit was when the college-educated Thelma Hopkins was telling Nell, "I'm glad that black women have finally outgrown that Aunt Jemima stereotype." To which Nell, on her knees, scrubbing Chief Kiniski's floor in a kerchief says, "yeah!" I was on the floor laughing. Rest in peace Aunt Nell, you sang and danced your way into our memories and will live forever. RIP, Nell Carter.

I liked the show quite a bit. First Dolph Sweet (the show definitely jumped the shark after he died) and now Nell. What a bummer. May she rest in peace. May TV Land or Nick at Nite do something classy and show some episodes as a tribute. I'll watch.

Its a shame to go that young, but if your going to take in kids wouln't you want to take a little better care of yourself so you could be there for them.

That's too bad. Nell Carter had the same birthday as me, September 13th. Not that that means anything, but it does remind you of your own mortality.
