I know people don't exactly follow my life on here, but I posted a couple of days ago that a good friends father was in the hospital after a bad accident. He passed away today and I have been asked to find something for her to read at the funeral. I'm stuck in my search and I need to find something fast. If anyone has anything they think would be good please pass it along.

By the way, I SWEAR to you, if you post a joke in this thread I will crawl up you and back down the other side. I'm serious here and more than a little shooken up about this, so don't be a dick.

the best thing i could suggestion i could give is either read something from the bible(if they are religious) or just have her tell a fond memory that she has with him. something that can show the loving or funny side of the person.

How does this sound?

Prayer for the Faithfully Departed
by Sigel Phoenix

There was a time when my entire life
Was freedom; when a day was but worth naught
If not lived on the sharp edge of the knife,
And the one law was never to be caught.

A moment. Then my strength was overwhelmed.
Invader of my wilderness! And yet
So soft the light you brought into my realm,
So dark, my shield against your gentle threat.

Elusive heart you sought; for you, I tried
To give my secret. But They came, and then
My song they choked, my spirit left to die ...
A butterfly, wings clipped, ne'er flies again.

But true you showed your words, your love to be --
By giving your life, that I might live free.

Hey cheif, I don't really have anything to offer but I am sorry and I will keep this in my thoughts and prayers. If you need to talk, you know where to find me.

That's Psalm 23. (The Lord's my shepherd, I'll not want. . . Yea, though I walk through Death's shadowed vale, I fear not for Thou art with me. . .)

There are several translations, many of which have been put to music.

I'm partial to Dylan Thomas's "Rage Rage Against the Dying of the Light", I forget the title, but I'm sure you know the one. I have orders that I am to read that when my own father passes, which, I hope, will not be for some time yet.

Also, there's a verse of 'Amazing Grace' that's a comfort, it begins "when we've been there ten thousand years". . . I can't remember the rest of it right now.

Two of the saddest funerals I ever attended were ones at which I volunteered as a chorister. Music can soothe enough to allow the family to grieve. . .perhaps looking through song lyrics may help; or finding a recording to play in lieu of a reading.

Whenever something bad happens, I always read the Enchiridion.

there's always that poem by john donne, "holy sonnets: death be not proud"

Death, be not proud, though some have called thee
Mighty and dreadful, for thou are not so:
For those whom thou think'st thou dost overthrow,
Die not, poor Death, nor yet canst thou kill me.
From rest and sleep, which by thy pictures be,
Much pleasure: then from thee much more must flow,
And soonest our best men with thee do go,
Rest of their bones, and soul's delivery.
Thou art slave to fate, chance, kings, and desperate men,
And dost with poison, war, and sickness dwell:
And poppy or charms can make us sleep as well
And better than thy stroke: why swell'st thou then?
One short sleep past, we wake eternally,
And death shall be no more: Death, thou shalt die.

i love this poem - i have it written real small on the back of a picture of my grandmother that passed away when i was 11.

You could always just draw on some of your own painful experiences. Either way, I'd say that keeping it breif would be nice for you since you're not sure what to say, and respectful to the family.
