View Full Version : Most Underrated Marvel characters

We already have the shittiest, so I thought I start a thread for the best characters who never get any credit, the ones with the most potential for a good story. (I would've included DC but its hard to find a good character there)
I always thought Cloak and Dagger were vastly underrated. I love the concept of the two runaways who get kidnapped and given the powers of darkness and light. the interplay of their personalites was always so good. Marvel should bring them back as a Knights series

War machine as a sadistic verson of iron man that works for the goverment would be great.....
They already did this, kinda, with the MAX line of "mature" books...he works for SHIELD...
And as for my favorite underrated character, I'm going with Moon Night. Those early issues Bill Sienkiewicz are gorgeous.
<img src=http://stolen.redsectorart.com/artwork/moonknight26cover.jpg>
My all-time favorite "forgotten" Marvel character has to be Adam Warlock. He had a brief moment of glory with the bitchin' "Infinity Gauntlet" mini series (Let's ignore the awful sequels) and sadly ignored and udnerrated "Warlock And The Infinity Watch", but his 70's tales are great. Jim Starlin created a brilliant Christ parallel that still stands up compared to the title put out today. And he created Thanos. And Thanos rules all.
<img src=http://www.flash.net/~jeanneb/warlock.jpg>
And I miss "Bill & Ted's Excellent Comic Book". Evan Dorkin wrote and drew all twelve issues, and it was insane. Oh well...at least we got "Milk & Cheese" instead...

They did do that. It wasn't so great.
My pick for underrated - Iceman.
I can't tell you the number of times it's been hinted in the comics about how incredibly devastating Iceman could be....and yet, they NEVER realize that potential. The X-Men writers just keep him in there primarily as a supporting character.

They did do that. It wasn't so great
I remember, and you're right, but I don't think they did a very good job with it. They spent the whole time fucking with Cloak's powers. I'd rather see them as homeless streetkids helping the scum of society.
another underrated character is Angel. they need to get into his head some more. He was once Archangel (remember this badass?), had his whole body and mind altered, and now he's a fairy with wings. There has to be some conflicting personality in him somewhere. He's also been thrust into a leadership role in one of the new story arcs. I'd love to see his old Archangel personality pop out every now and then.

They even teased an arc that the wings were still being controlled by Apocolypse, and they would just randomly kill people if Warren was incapacitated, but like most sub-plots in those days, it was forgotten...

that would be the greatest storyline ever! how could they let that go?
This happened right around the time Bishop first showed up, during the first story with Colossus's brother Mikhail. The newly formed "Gold team" went through one of Mikhail's portholes and were knocked unconsious, and Archangel discovered, to his horror, that he had killed a colony of natives while he was unconsious. He got really brooding after that, but the marvel had subplot ADD at the time, (plus there seemed to be a new writer every few months) and the story was forgotten. I remember Jean giving Warren a lecture about it, but I think that was as far as it got...

Most underrated?
For Hero I would say Callisto and the Morlock. The mutants who were not able to keep their human appearence because of their mutation and they were forced to live underground. Like the Morlocks in the H.G. Wells novel.
As for Villan? Carnage! This mutation of Venom who has taken over the body of a Homicidal Maniac? Only bad things can happen...but they really only kept him to Spider-Man or Venom storylines. He could have done SO much more if he was released to the "rest" of the marvel universe.

Always dug the chic Domino who used to hang with cable. I also feel that Reed Richards is under appreciated and they should have expanded his powers like everyone else in the FF. Franklin Richards could have been a great character if they didn't screw him up. Molecule man was a great villian who became so powerful they had to phase him out. Absorbing man could be the best villian but they never let his character grow and let's face it , the name sucked. Anyone else remember Purple Man? Another could have been great bad guy with a faggy name.

And Domino is damned because she's a Liefeld character. I thought she could teleport or something, but whatever her power was, it was rarely used, and then a couple years back it was revealed the Domino who had been around was a "fake" Domino. Retarded story for a retarded character.

This is why I liked Domino. Her powers weren't evident, they were unquantifyable and intangible, because they were luck based. She was kind of a combination of the Black Cat and Electra. I am not, was not a Liefield fan, but the sun shines even on a dog's ass some days. I'm shocked I didn't get pounded for the Reed Richards comment. One more thing about Domino, her character was extremly loyal, which to me is appealing.

Kurt Busiek and Erik Larsen brought the defenders back a couple of years ago with the lineup consisting of Dr.Strange, Hulk, Silver Surfer and Namor, pretty good read and Mojo i believe ellis was writing X-Force rather close to the end of the original part of the series but i do believe someone took over before milligan did, im going to look up the issue numbers and when i get them ill post them here.

Erik Larsen was always my favorite artist. His Spidermans were amazing.
My favorite Image character that was under rated was The Savage Dragon. Erik Larsen was able to write entertaining stories while keeping it intresting and easy. Plus his artwork was nice. I like the more cartoonie style he used, unlike the more detailed drawings of Todd McFarlane.

If memory serves me, CopyCat was working with Deadpool (who is now, maybe, "Agent X" Alex Hayden) on some sort of scheme in an attempt to take down Cable and / or the X-Force.
As for Erik Larsen, I can't stand the guy. I don't have anything negative to say about his artwork or writing, I just hate him because he's prone to saying ridiculously stupid things which disrespect many of the individuals who have made the comics business great.

I with Se7en. I loved Larsen's run on the Spider-Man titles as an artist, and "Savage Dragon" has always been consistently entertaining (Though I'm tired of the way he draws women. They all have piles of curly Jersey hair, tits as big as their head, and underwear shoved so far up the crack of their ass you'd need the jaws of life to pry them out. Way to buck the stereotype, deek), but the shit he spouts in his letter columns and in interviews are just inane, inflammatory ramblings. The pissing match he's had going on with the equally annoying (And way past his prime) Peter David for almost a decade now is one of the stupidest things to ever emerge from the land of comic books, and THAT'S saying something...

So many of the second wave X-Men seemed promising. In particular, Rachel Summers was an awesome character under Claremont, but in Excalibur she spent time wandering the universe before getting written back in a faceoff against Galactus. Within a year after that in ish #75 she was sent into the future and written into such a hole that no one has been able to rescue her since.
