I decided to splurge and order vegetable jalfrezi, naan bread, and raiti.
Anyone else dig Indian food? I LOVE 6th street!

the closest thing to Indian food i eat is "buffalo wings"...
of course that would be American Indian food :)
I went to a local Indian Restaurant with my Indian co-worker a year or so ago. It turns out I ordered a Kabob type meal with assorted meat. To me it was dry, spicy, and i did not enjoy it too much. He(Sajeev) wound up getting something that was nice and saucy. "go figure"
And they didn't have any coffee :(
My wife is a "much Americanized Syrian" and i have tasted and continue to eat alot of middle eastern food and dishes...

I was tricked into eating that one time. I had bright orange wings. Not sure what they're called. That was 4 years ago. Haven't been back since. I learned my lesson!!!

I like it. There are several pretty good restaurants in Westchester.

There's one down the road from where I work that has a buffet on Fridays. The last time we went there was tandoori BEEF as one of the choices; I think bad karma is the best anybody who ate that could have hoped for.

Indian food rawks. I'm always down when someone suggests it. My favorite is aloo paratha. I love their rice and chicken with yogurt on the side. Oh and that dessert that's wrapped in foil that is edible. Yummy, I'll have to treat myself one of these days.

Any Indian food fans?
Are you kidding I am English it's our national dish!
Seriously a recent poll showed that more English people eat Indian food than they eat "Roast Beef and Yorkshire pudding" whiich is supposed to be the National dish.
Birmingham (UK) is reputed to have the best Indian restaurants there are with the "Balti" having originated there in it's current form.
However I am really impressed by the quality of the Indian restaurants here. Two good ones here in Westport and there is a great one on W44 Jewel of India.
I also make a mean curry and I am still a member of the Curry Club.

chiken tikka marsala is the bestest. pappadam bread is the shit too! If you wanna try it in Westchester go to Tandoori in Port Chester. When I was in London I had the best Indian food I ever had, in fact it was the best meal i ate. (my best friend in high schools family took me to Europe, theyre millionaires so we went to reaaaaaaaallly nice restaurants). I love Indian food its always where i have my birthday dinners and stuff. In fact I went there for my graduation dinnner and I took my black boyfriend. He was scared of all the food so he had Tandoori chicken and really liked it. thats a good first dish to try. ummmm the bread is the best!

Samosas (lke little potato/meat filled pastries, can be deep fried (usually) or baked, like an indian egg roll), tandoori chicken (or chicken tikka if you prefer boneless white meat - chicken marinated in yogurt and cooked in a ... you got it - tandoor oven) and saag paneer (spinach with a cheese made from yogurt) are probably about the most "generic" sort of americanized type indian food you'll find on a menu. They aren't meant to be too spicy. Sort of the equivalent of like egg rolls and chicken chow mein at a chinese restaurant. Nothing wrong with them in the slightest, but every indian restaurant has them and them will be as "safe" as you can get at an indian restaurant, in case you're worried about overly spicy things etc.

Tandoor chicken? Can you describe it? I see a place by me called Tandoor Palace. Tell me whats in the stuff and what its tastes like if you never ate it. Im trying to read up on it and so far, the only thing I saw was that you need to eat a veriety of things to avoid getting an upset stomach, is that true? I mean, is it like chinese food?

Keep in mind, most Indian food is tempered for American tastes. The spices used are sweet and somewhat mild.
Chicken tandoori is chicken marinated in yogurt with ginger and curry. It's baked in a tandoori (clay) oven (hence the name). It often comes out of the kitchen sizzling (like some fajita dishes in Mexican restaurants) and often served on a bed of onions. The chicken is bright red.
It's a safe bet for the Indian food newbie!

My favorite Indian restaurant in Arlington closed a month or so ago - a little hole in the wall that was the best. There's another one that's all right, but it may be kicked out too because all of Clarendon is being overrun with Cheesecake factory styled chains.
It's been awhile since I've been in DC, but I'm sure there must be a good Indian restaraunt in Georgetown or Adams Morgan.
I hate Vietnamese food, which we have everywhere in Arlington (along with Savadorean food, which I love).
If you like Indian and haven't tried Etheopean you should try it! There are plenty of good places here in the DC area, including one right next to the Virginia strip club, the Crystal City Restaurant just minutes from my Uncle Bill-like penthouse apartment.

Wow, more people that like all kinds of food, but not Vietnamese. I thought I was the only one. Of course, to be fair, the only time i've had Vietnamese I had the tripe and tendon in my pho, so that might have something to do with it.

Recyclerz, I'd recommend Malabar Hill in Elmsford. That is one of my absolute favorite restaurants, and my favorite Indian place!! I go for the Vindaloo and the Malabar Medley...the closer to molten lava it is, the more alive my taste buds are alive and the happier I am! :) Their less spicy dishes are excellent too!
For sr71 and reefdwella, I agree with everyone else. An appetizer like samosa or the aloo paratha are very yummy, and dinners like the tandoori chicken (basically Indian style barbecue) or the tikka masala are not hot but very delicious.
6th Street in the city is great for inexpensive good Indian food...and occasionally you get live music during the meal.
Vietnamese food is great...give me the pho at Saigon Grill!!

Probably. Mostly the Vietnamese I've had is similar to thai, only sweeter. There's a ton of overlap, same with Malaysian food. A lot of the dishes are essentially the same; they just have different names and the flavors are slightly different, e.g. in all three you willl find satay but the peanut sauce you dip it in is quite different, though penut in all cases.
I really got into Malaysian food a while ago (I was overseas). You don't see too many of those restaurants around, though.
The only "Malaysian" food I've had in NYC is Penang. There are a coupld of locations. They are both awful awful awful, sort of like wanna-be Vongs. Stay away at all costs if you actually enjoy your food in the slightest. Pretentious, tasteless, awful awful awful. I like Pandan Leaf up in Boston.

Looks like we have Penang here in DC.
I know there's a lot of overlap between Thai and Malaysian. But in Perth, most of the folks I met were Malaysian, hence the popularity of Malaysian food. They also distiniguished Singaporian cusine, which seems almost silly. I used to order Laksa, which seems to be a big Malaysian dish, with many variations. It was very spicy and good.
