View Full Version : is anybody straight edge anymore?

i remember a few years back, it seemed like there were a lot of straight edge kids popping up again. now, i really don't see them anymore. maybe it's just because i'm older now, and so i'm not around them anymore.

i'm not necessarily even talking about kids in minor threat shirts with big x's scrawled on the backs of their hands, but it is very rare to meet people who live that lifestyle anymore. is it a dying breed?

I was straight edge between the ages of 18 and 21, now i drink a bit. A lot of the straights I knew would get drunk before a show and toss the X on their hand to let everyone know they were straight. I for one held to that belief for a while, but i'm not a kid anymore, drinking every so often isn't such a big deal and I control myself so I don't see being straight edge as such a big deal anymore. I still won't touch drugs, but booze and sex are A-OK in my book.

I thought "Straight-Edge" became "Emo"...

And all the Straight-Edge cats I knew or have since met have all become alcoholics.

I still see some here and there at shows but I think a more pressing question could be is that sXe bands aren't really around much anymore. At least not as much as they were in past years. I mean Earth Crisis broke up, Strife kind of abandoned the discipline and THE big sXe label Vicotry Records has become quite the shodow of its former self.

Me personally, I drink very little and hardly ever get drunk. I can be funny and entertaining and MYSELF without the drunkeness. I have not touched drugs (pot) in a really long time since the freakout during the listening of MonsterMagnet: 25 Tab. That was SCARY! I am not really promiscuous and never have been. I only do the deed when I have the emotional connection with the person as opposed to f-ing everything that moves. My biggest crutch is smoking and that will end soon I hope.

Sometimes I wish I was.
I think I'm an alcoholic.
Everytime I drink something happens.
Last night at my friend's house I was wasted and broke 2 pool cues.

Straight edge has always been a gimmick - something for poseurs like Blunder Boy to desperately grasp, hoping unsuccessfully that it gives meaning to an otherwise unremarkable existence.

I'm pretty much straight edge.

I don't do drugs, and I rarely ever drink. I do admit a fondness for cigars (I can't smoke cigs, otherwise I'd chainsmoke, what with my oral fixations), though, but that's a minor vice IMO.

I've never put little x's on my hand, because that's just so gay.

there is a strait edge movement still around, people don't flaunt it. I personally set goals for myself. No sex before 16, not getting drunk before 18. I've kept to both of them but I don't look down on people who aren't living the way I am. They have as much right to drink as I have to decide not to.

The straight edge scene is HUGE out in SoCal. jesus, when i was on tour out there, thats all i met. were straight edge kids.

and ariennette,

The straight edge scene is actually pretty big. In philly it is HUGE. philly sucks anyhow. but in jersey, there is a big edge scene.

It's kids jocking floorpunch and wishing they could be them. The "edge" movement has gotten pretty big again and i personally hate it. Because it is all that "posi-core" crap. give me a break. there is nothing about hardcore that is supposed to be "posi-core".

the whole shore scene(that being jersey) is posi... I know NY, there really isnt an edge scene... but there are edge kids.. but in nyc, edge is pretty dead.

but go to philly, everyone wants to be Ray Cappo

everyone wants to be Ray Cappowow, i never really thought i'd see "ray cappo" on the message board. nice. i saw shelter play a bunch of times back in the day, those were some of the best shows i've ever been to

and i, for the record, have never been straight edge. i did date a guy for about a year who was, so i sort of lived the lifestyle for a while... but my heart was never in it. i think excesses are generally bad, but i have no problem with people doing the things that sxe people wont

The funny thing is, everyone thinks that "straight edge" means NO sex or booze...while yes, it does mean no illegal drugs at all, "straight edge" just means not letting sex or booze CONTROL you...you can still get a little sumthin' or a drink or two every so often...the point is to not allow yourself to, say, become an alcoholic, or pursue women for ONLY sexual reasons...there's a lot of flexibility...

sheepy is right. people should strive to break away from the group, as opposed to being a part of one. Where's the individuality in putting a label on yourself?

actually mojo, i will TOTALLY dissagree with you.

the term "straight edge" was coined by Ian Mckaye. we all know that too.. he was in a "straight edge" band called Minor Threat. and now he is in Fugazi.

To quote Ian directly from the book banned in DC Ian McKaye says:

"straight edge is a life style i choose to live. No cigarettes, no alcohol. Basically, it is no drinking, no drugs, no smoking, no sex"

and from the founder of the term, how can you say that he is wrong?

i dont like the idea of labeling anymore than you all seem to... but people often end up finding themselves encompassed by one. of course it's unecessary, but people like putting things into categories. with something like straight edge, i think people who put themselves under the label are proud of their belief system, and it's the easiest way to identify themselves with other people with similar beliefs.
but i know a few really straight edge people. they tell me that smoking is going to kill methat's not straight edge, it's science. do what you like, but those things will kill you
