Billy Simms was pretty incredible too. What a shame the Lions never had a great team around these guys.

Short career, but the most dominant back I saw was Earl Campbell.

Don't be fooled by the Rocks that I got, I'm still Jimmy from the block.

Jim Brown. Talk about retiring too early. Best combination of brute strength, speed, agility and just an all around bad ass!

Second place vote to Sweetness

Consensus among the experts is Jim Brown. Never saw him play, though, so I can't say.

Quite possibly the best I've seen is Bo Jackson. The guy was incredible. Tragic the way his career ended so suddenly.

Earl Campbell was also unbelievable, as was Gale Sayers (from highlight films).

without thinking about it too long, Walter Payton for the combination of speed, power, balance, and will-power. OJ is not far behind. Barry Sanders is probably the most elusive of all running backs...

Never saw Jim Brown play, other than films but "older" people will say he was the Best ever...

barry sanders. he would
easily be the yardage
leader, and he never was
on much of a team.

Though it's fun to do so, you can only seriously compare RB's to others in their era. Barry Sanders can't get the nod from me, the best has gotta have some power, as he'll still get yards against a very good defense, whereas a scatback can be shut down more easily. Sanders fans- look what happened to your boy when he went up against the 'Skins in the playoffs. The best I've seen are Earl Cambell, Jim Brown, Emmit Smith, John Riggins and, [cringe] O.J.
