View Full Version : World Trade Center Steel To Be Used in USS New York

WASHINGTON (NNS) -- When USS New York (LPD 21) joins the fleet in 2007, it will sail with a permanent memorial to those who lost their lives in New York on Sept. 11, 2001.

Steel salvaged from the World Trade Center (WTC) wreckage will be used to build New York. The steel was recently shipped to Northrop Grumman Ship Systems in Pascagoula, Miss., and will ultimately be transported to its Avondale Operations shipyard in New Orleans, where the ship will be built.

After shipyard personnel inspects the steel, it will be melted down and used to make the bow stem of New York.

This just friggin' rocks.

The steel from the Center will be at the tip of the spear. Awesome idea.

These types of memorials will make a differnce.

What kind of ship is it going to be? It's too bad they don't make battleships anymore.

That's a great idea. It's nice to see that there are finally going to be some permanent memorials for September 11th.

That is a really cool idea along with the one I saw on CNN this morning on how there will be museum exhibits all over the World with WTC artifacts in them.

USS New York will be a San Antonio-class amphib.

Here's the DoD press release:

Not really. The Navy's next destroyer, the DD(X), will be responsible for providing "volume fires/precision strike" in support of forces ashore.

The requirements and details are still being worked out with the Marines and Army but DD(X) is expected to have an 155mm Advanced Gun System that will provide the land attack capability previously provided by battleships.

Is it wrong to get wood while reading this:

RIM-116A Rolling Airframe Missile (RAM)

The RIM-116A RAM is designed as an all-weather, high-firepower, low-cost, self-defense system against anti-ship missiles. It uses the infrared seeking of the Stinger missile and the warhead, rocket motor, and fuse from the Sidewinder missile.

Its one of the weapons systems on the San Antonio Class Boats... And if it is wrong to get wood reading that, I dont wanna be right.

Forgive me for killing anyone's high, but it seems a bit of an ironic tribute to the thousands that died at the WTC: using the steel to make a giant killing machine capable of leading to many more WTC-like disasters.

And it also could be used to protect us from any other possible future attacks.

What do you suggest we do, surrender? I dont know if you realize that this land is not fucking france...

Perhaps you misunderstand me. If you're going to make a ship, make a ship. But the ruins of the WTC is also the place of death for 3000 people. It is entirely inappropriate and absolutely distasteful to build anything with those ruins, and certainly not a weapon of war.

But Hippie, at the same time, wouldn't it be disrespectful to do ANYTHING with the steel if we go by that train of thought? Build something, anything else, throwing it away, melting it down...it's gotta go somewhere...and they're not using it to actually make the weapons, just the bow...

I understand your sentiments. What do you think should be done with the steel? There's simply too much for it to all be used in a memorial in New York...

who made u the the spokesman for the dead? If I was one of those who perished, sure I'd want some of the ruins to be used as a memorial, sure I'd want some to be used elsewhere so it doesnt go to waste, but I definately would be very happy about this news--that some of the steel which surrounded me as I died will help prevent the same fate for other Americans. God Bless the USS New York and those who are to serve on her.

I was standing in front of Tower II when the second plane hit. I felt the heat and tasted the fuel when the debris roared over my head. I watched people jump and die.

I for one think we should put the steel into the ship . The ship is a tool of justice and it is a symbol of the dedication and hard work that has made this country great. It will also be an inspiration to the men and women who are risking their lives to save more lives on American soil.

But on to a related topic...have they settled on final design for the "official" memorial yet? Or what to build around the footprints? Is there a set date it's going to be decided by? Those designs that were on the news a few weeks back were pretty odd-looking...

Pretty Fucking cool:
Ship Built With World Trade Center Scrap By BECKY BOHRER,AP
Posted: 2008-03-01 17:53:43
AVONDALE, La. (March 1) - The USS New York, an amphibious assault ship built with scrap steel from the ruins of the World Trade Center, was christened Saturday as a source of strength and inspiration for the nation. Thousands of people, including friends and families of those who died in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, gathered near the hulking gray ship, trimmed in red, white and blue banners.

The bow stem, which contains 7.5 tons of steel from the site, bore a shield with two gray bars to symbolize the twin towers and a banner over that declaring "Never Forget," a slogan among New Yorkers.

"May God bless this ship and all who sail on her," ship sponsor Dotty England said before smashing a bottle of champagne against it, producing a loud thump to go with the spurting liquid and flying streamers.

Story after story of lives lost in, and touched by, the attacks peppered the ceremony, held under the blazing sun and broadcast on large screens. It all brought back painful memories for New York Police Lt. Matt Murphy. But the reason for his being here, though, was a source of pride, he said.

"I tell you, it's a fantastic day. Sometimes you think you're over something," he said, his eyes welling up as he looked off toward the ship, "and then you realize you're not completely."

Deputy Defense Secretary Gordon England told the crowd that ship names provide a legacy, and that for their crews they serve as a source of strength and inspiration.

When the attacks occurred, the ship was planned but had no name. Then-New York Gov. George Pataki asked the Navy to commemorate the disaster by reviving the name New York. That required an exception to Navy policy of assigning state names only to nuclear submarines.

The steel from the towers is now part of the ship that splices through the water, leading the way.

"It resurrects the ashes, so to speak, to do great things for our nation," said Bill Glenn, a spokesman for Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding, the ship builder.

Along with the steel from one of the worst terrorist attacks in the U.S., it also survived one of the nation's worst natural disasters: Hurricane Katrina.
