After posting about Rod Stewart, it got me thinking that he was just about as good solo as he was when he was with Rod Stewart and the Faces.

I am trying to think of more guys/gals that were actually better when they went solo.

In terms of sales you might want to say Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins, Sting, and Paul Simon.

Don't get me wrong, I love Sting solo, but the Police were better.

Here's two that are a toss up.

Ozzy and David Lee Roth

Ozzy definitely has had some great solo albums, but was his music better in Sabbath?

David Lee Roth had some good solo hits, but I think he was better in Van Halen.

I agree and disagree. The Police kicked ass, and his songs were great in the Police. But in terms of his music evolving with him as a musician sometimes I think his solo work is better...only because it's deeper in some ways and has developed in his range somewhat.

My favorite Sting solo albums are...

Dream of the Blue Turtles
Nothing Like the Sun
Soul Cages
Ten Sumners Tales

Yes......Ozzy worked with some great guitarists, but his best work was with Tony Iommi.

Pete Townshend.

I was never a big Who fan, but I usually like his solo stuff a lot better.

I totally think Sting was better with the Police.

Buckethead was fucking kick ass solo and GnR fucking sucks donkey balls and is dragging down his reputation.

there is no way sting was better solo than he was with the police.
don't get me wrong, he's had some good albums on his own, but never as good as the police.

I agree with everyone that the police overall were better. I'm talking more along the lines of sting as an artist. I think he is making music the way he wants to and is happier because he has the freedom to diversify his range.

I think he'd be much more successful making music with the police still, and I loved all of their albums.
