CAN WE STOP REPLACING WHITE CHARACTERS WITH BLACK ACTORS? CAN'T WE STICK TO THE ORIGINAL STORY EVERRRRR????
KINGPIN IS BLACK. NOW KOJAK?
Look, this isn't a fucking black/white thing. This is a purity thing. If I wanted to make a Shaft movie or a Blackula film with Ed Norton I'd be hearing about it left and right.

you don't take a white character and try to add a genX spin by making him black.

This is beyond retarded. And I think Rhames kicks some serious ass. LEAVE KOJAK ALONE.
I do, however, think the casting of Michael Clark Duncan as the Kingpin is fantastic. Just for sheer size, there's really nobody else you could have gotten that can at least halfway act...

Well he was actually born "Mickey Gubitosi". But my point was more about possibly casting a black actor to play a character with the Italian name of "Tony Baretta".

Look, this isn't a fucking black/white thing. This is a purity thing.
i know you're not making this racial, jeff, but you might wanna consider omitting the use of 'purity' when talking about black/white.
in some cases, its clearly ridiculous, like when the statue of the fireman in 9/11 were made ethnic when the actual fireman werent. but in this case with kojak, i dont see the big deal. its a fictional character that was played by a white guy, but now cast as a black guy. i think its great because you have to see ving rhames as an actor trying to live up to the standards of another actor. not a black guy measuring up to a white guy.
its kinda like the episode of south park where the town flag was a bunch of white dudes hanging a black guy. the kids saw it as just a bunch of people hanging another person. they didnt even see color. in this case, i wont either.

No, again, nothing to do with racism at all. Purity in this case is presenting the story with as much unfiltered dedication to the original.
Why don't they cast a black Batman or Superman. It would be INSANE, THE COMIC BOOK CHARACTER WAS WHITE! Like I said, a white guy in a black role would drive the black community crazy.
Take Spawn for example. If they cast him with a white character it would totally throw off the entire story. The character is black.
Kojak IS Savales. Savales is Kojak. They are as much a part of each other as Peter Falk's Columbo, Clint Eastwood's Dirty Harry, and Andy Griffith's Matlock.
This is just an attempt to shake things up and "make it fresh" by casting a hip black actor in the role. I HATE making things hip for the sake of making them hip. Kojak wasn't hip. He was a fucking bad ass white cop with an attitude.
Why even do another Kojak? What's the point? We can't find any new stories? Can't we just let old tv series rest with dignity? What's next, an all new "All in the Family?", with the racism toned down to accomodate the ridiculous political correctness in this country?
I miss Kojak. Hell, I miss "All in the Family". At least those shows were raw, unlike the pasteurized, feel good comedy of shows like Friends and Will & Grace that make me want to vomit.

There was a remake of sorts a few years ago. It was called "704 Houser" and starred John Amos in the "Archie Bunker" role.

I don't want to see TJ Hooker or the Black Panther played by ANYONE. Those shows made children cry and old ladies explode.
Now, I WOULD be pissed if they dared to try and remake "Hawaii 5-0" somehow, with ANY actor, white or black. You can't fuck with the Lord 'do, dammit.
Actually, I'm sick of old TV shows being remade as new series or movies, period. It's lazy, and usually awful.

I think greater irony would be obtained with Bill Cosby as Archie Bunker.
Why would they even need to mention Kojak other than to help "sell" the idea at the original pitch.
They should have just had the balls to simply make a good cop film with Ving Rhames.

And we have another one:
USA reviving 'McCloud,' with Brett Butler
Friday, January 17, 2003 Posted: 9:51 AM EST (1451 GMT)
HOLLYWOOD, California (Variety) -- Comedienne Brett Butler will star in a revival of "McCloud" for USA Network, as the basic cable channel continues to dust off old TV shows.
USA, which is part of Universal Television Group, just commissioned a series of "Kojak" movies with Ving Rhames in the lead role, as well as a pilot of a new "Baretta," which will be re-set from Los Angeles to Detroit.
"McCloud," too, is getting turned on its ear.
Originally, the cast was led by Dennis Weaver as a fish-out-of-water detective from rural New Mexico trying to navigate New York City. It aired on NBC in the 1970s.
"I told my mom that Margaret Cho is going to be Matlock next," Butler told Daily Variety.
"There is part of me that's really self-conscious about stepping into (Weaver's) boots," she added. "I loved that show. He made it possible to be a proletarian who is literate but still speaks with an accent.
"If they're going to put me on a horse and give me a six-gun, why the hell not?"
Butler said, adding that she looks at the project "like a redneck in a kabuki."
Butler had been developing a different show at USA Network with Dan Petrie Jr., who will write the new "McCloud." That project would have seen the former "Grace Under Fire" star return to primetime as a single mom who's a private investigator.
"Each of these revivals needs its own fresh take," Jackie Lyons, USA Network senior VP of original series programming, said. "We thought, what if it's a woman -- what if it's the quintessential tough Southern woman? We had this deal with Brett, and it was perfect.
"Brett is an incredibly creative powerhouse," Lyons said. "She's very funny, very creative, very collaborative. So her voice will be very important in this."
Like the other two revivals, "McCloud" could air as soon as summer 2003 -- with, as Lyons put it, a lot of luck -- or more likely in January or summer 2004.
