Local automakers are under fire in a new advertising campaign that claims SUV drivers are funding terrorists

Hollywood anti-SUV activist Arianna Huffington -- a self-proclaimed former SUV driver -- says the nation's dependency on foreign oil helps fund Middle East terrorists.

Come on - my wife's 19mpg explorer supports terrorists, but my 29 mpg honda doesnt? What about my house's oil heat - uses almost as much in a year as my wife's car. What about soccer mom's and their minivans.

BTW We've been using oil in our cars for a f-ing century - this is some new idea? Right my dad's cadillac in 1979 was SOOO efficient :-)

I understand the backlash for using the Terrorism message, I mean it's pretty fucking insane to use the deaths of thousands world wide for your own cause. That's American marketing though, fucking ridiculous.

On the other hand, isn't it about time we look at the SUV craze for what it is? A pissing contest. Granted it includes men and women, thus making it an unconventional pissing contest, but it is nevertheless. The only people who should be driving SUV's are the military and people who need to go offroad on a regular basis.

Any feature you want from an SUV can be obtained in a cheaper, more efficient, smaller and more enjoyable to drive(dynamically, looking at slalom speeds and skidpad numbers at least, i can't speak for your ego) Minivan. I would suggest a Town and Country for you SUV folks.

The point is that cars are becoming more efficient, developments in direct injection and valve timing as well as cylinder deactivation are leading the way, as are more frequent uses of diesels and turbos.
I drive a diesel so I can't really argue about emissions, but I can say that my 83 Mercedes 300DT routinely gets 30-35 mpg and is just short of being as reliable as death and taxes. Opel has a new concept out that is real world buildable, runs up to it's 155mph limiter and gets nearly 100mpg. I'm not sure about it meeting California Emissions but i would imagine that efficiency has a price somewhere.

Don't believe a Diesel can be quick? Test drive a VW Jetta TDI.

Yeah. That's right, i'm a whore. Live with it.

The point is that the countries that house and support terrorist groups are Uber-rich because of the world's insane and unnecessary dependance on oil, and the only reason we still are, are because the companies that have the most to lose from our finding better sources of fuel are rich enough to influence enough people to keep that from happning. Like everything bad in life, it's a greed thing.

The recent "My dick is bigger than yours" SUV craze is an extension of this, see stupid greedy people pump money into rich greedy people; add monarchy, opression and Religion, and you get terorism. "It's not that complicated..."

hmm from the Dodge webside - Town and Country 18/25 mpg
from the ford website - explorer xls - 17/21 mpg

samn that 1/4 mile per gallon is really going to make a difference in the long run :-)

"My dick is bigger than yours" SUV craze

Ford is going to stop making the Excursion because people just aren't buying them the way they used to. I never understood why anyone other than a contractor would need an SUV that big. And whenever I see them on the road, 9 times out of ten, there's only one person in the truck.

Ridiculous.

my other point is they're pointing fingers at SUV owners, meanwhile they use plastic products, heat their homes, use electricity, etc etc etc - there are a lot of hidden (and not so hidden) use of petroleum products that also contribute hugely to this dependancy

18 / 25 = 0.72
17 / 21 = 0.81

The Minivan gives you 0.09 less per gallon than the Explorer.

Whatever, I like the way gas smells.

My problem is those big ass fucking cars block vision at intersections.

The thing is, the SUV thing is the most avoidable on a personal level. People can simply choose to buy a cheaper, smaller, more efficient car, and it doesn't solve the problem, but it does help.
If we want to be completely non-dependant on Middle Eastern oil would require huge changes in the country's infrastructure that the oil lobbyists would never allow congress to pass...

ummm......why did you divide 18 by 25 and 17 by 21? that's not how you calculate fuel efficiency. it's 18 mpg city, 25 highway.
the minivan gives anywhere 1-4 miles per gallon more than the explorer.

that's how it's printed - the first number is the city and the second highway, so 17/21 is 17mpg city and 21 highway

I wonder if a "small car company" wasn't behind this.

I have read, though, that something like 95% of the world's heroin comes from Afghanistan.

Yes, most Heroin comes from the middle east. Heroin isn't all drugs by any stretch of the imagination, but it's probably the most dangerous and addictive. Most people who "experiment" (who I know anyway) would never touch heroin.

Actually the commercials that say "drugs support terrorism," I would find acceptible if they said "Heroin supports terrorism." That makes more sense and has a much better argument behind it, but that isn't what they say...

Meanwhile most of the other drugs come from Central and South America, who we can easily opress and bully all we want... :-)

More like 50%-75% comes from the Afghani region, and surrounding countries...the rest mostly comes from southeast Asia..."Golden Triangle", BANZAAAAAAAAIIII!!!

95% of the world's heroin comes from Afghanistan.
Afghanistan and Burma account for 90% of the world's heroin production. - UN Office on Drugs and Crime.

And most of their H goes to Asian and European markets, by far the world's two largest markets. Most of the US's comparitively smaller horse market is fed by smaller producers in Latin America.
