I vote for Joe Namath, bad knees and horrible conditions at Shea and he still dominated the game. Vince Lombardi said Joe was the best he ever saw, can't argue with the Coach. Damn, I loved the AFL!

I have to go with Montana too...Montana was an animal and and did well with both San Fran and KC. And before that, he was a Notre Dame boy...so my vote is for Joe Montana

I'd go with John Elway for quarterbacks that I've seen, but based upon reputation, I'd go with Johnny Unitas. Calling your own plays and still excelling. Unbelievable.

Joe Willie Namath.
With Terry Bradshaw, Fran Tarkenton and Joe Montana getting runners up.

I'd go with Johnny Unitas.
Namath vs. Johnny U. Damn, there were some great games!
Montana was money, Marino was one of the best passers.

Joe Montana. No question. Besides the skills, he was a winner through and through. He was the Michael Jordan of football.
Joe Willie won a breakthrough game, and had the quickest release of any passer ever, but he had absolutely no mobility. That is what disqualifies him from being considered the greatest.

Poor Kenny O'Brien. I think he was a decent enough passer with some great receivers: Al Toon and Wesley Walker, but I think he had a really shitty offensive line. I remember him getting sacked constantly!
I wish I could have seen Johnny U vs. Namath. My father always tells me how fun it was to watch AFL games back in the day. I know the COlts were in the NFL in the 60s, but what a matchup. Earl Morrall wasn't too shabby either as a backup. I'd give him the Best Backup QB award.

While a topic can be amusing or diverting, really you can only compare an athlete to his contemporaries.Who knows what athletes of the past would have done in todays world of sport, what with the different rules and modern sports medicine. For example, in today's NFL, I think Sonny Jurgensen would have had 300 yard halves. My short list of the greatest QB's of all time would be Sammy Baugh [led the league in passing, interceptions and punting one year], Jurgensen and Namath in their prime, and Montana in the modern era.

In my mind, it's Joe Montana. Montana dominated football when I was growing up.

Great point. Most people on the board have never seen Namath play, the same way I never saw greats like Baugh and Luckman. It's still a fun discussion though.

I am gonna go with Marino just because he was consistently successful throughout his career. He was dependable from his rookie year to his final game.

DCPete walked me through how to FINALLY post a sig.
We've been fortunate to see some truly great ones in recent years, but I guess Elway, Montana, and Marino were the best of the 80's and 90's crowd.
They all had their specific strengths, but I'd take Montana over any of them for his leadership, coolness, and his ability to see the entire field and read defenses in a split second.

Montana was great...but id have to say he was more a product of his offensive system than anything..
that being said, if it was based on numbers id have to take Marino, but i judge it on if i had to take on QB with my life on the line..id take Unitas...

Trent Dilfer is one superbowl ring better than Dan Marino.
Old school: Y.A. Tittle
New school: J.Montana, J.Elway
Now school: Pennington...

I'm a Bronco fan so naturally I say John Elway but you've also gotta go with Montana, Unitas and Marino as the big 4.
I'm so broke I can't afford to pay attention.

No Bernie Kosar?
As mentioned before in this thread, it's difficult to pick the best of all time because of the many changes in the game era to era.I was lucky enough to see Namath, Unitas, Jurgensen and many others, along with the greats of today. Namath is the only one that amazed me and had me glued to the TV, well, maybe that Montana guy wasn't so shabby either.
