What an injustice!
I'm a Yankees fan and I have to admit that he was a dominant player who should have been voted in.
He was one of the most feared sluggers in the game..what a shame.

I agree with you Heckler, but there is one player that should be in there ahead of Jim Rice. An old Brooklyn Dodger by the name of Gil Hodges. The problem with Hodges is that he doesnt meet what is know as 'unwritten requirement' of 400 HR's. But people fail to remember that Hodges played in a time when pitching was dominant and 370 HR is quite and impressive feat.
Ozzie Smith being put in was a travesty, and a slap in the face of a lot of great players too. especially to players like Hodges.

This is ridiculous. This guy averaged:
.305 Avg
91 Runs scored
27 Doubles
30 HR's (led league 3 times)
106 RBI (led league 2 times)
178 Hits (led league 1 time)
....FOR A DECADE!! Not to mention that these numbers are reduced due to a year where he only played about 110 games. I hate the Red Sox, but this guy should be a no-brainer.
(ps: Graig Nettles deserves a little look after Rice & hidges get in...sorry, he was my alltime favorite player pre-Mattingly era.)

Jim Rice was my hero when I played baseball as a kid. I would have loved to have seen him get in this time but, maybe like "Geeery" Carter, it'll take a while to happen.

My friends and I last night decided we will be making the trip to Cooperstown for Kid's induction ceremony.

I don't think Ozzie Smith getting in is a travesty. If you can be considered THE BEST of all time at ANY aspect of the game at your position, you deserve to get in.

That's one of the reasons I always thought Keith Hernandez should get in. He won like 87 Gold Gloves in a row. He made it impossible for his opposition to lay down a sacrifice bunt, thus changing their game strategy any time someone played the Mets or Cardinals. He won an MVP and has 2 World Series Rings for cripes sake!

See what getting in trouble for a little coke can do to you?

Yes, with stats like that, Rice is a Hall of Famer, but what do you expect from the BBWAA and the old timers committee. Those mighty sports writers and old timers vote and make decisions based on their own personal thoughts, and ignore facts and stats that keep out qualified players, while inducting their "favorites" ( example....voting in Pee Wee Reese while ignoring Phil Rizzuto, who personally called me a huckleberry once ). If you're not a darling of the sportswriters, then you're at the mercy of the veteran's committee.
I remember when Tom Seaver was voted in ( the highest percentage of first year voting ), and one sportswriter left Seaver of his ballot completely. When asked why, he replied "I never vote for someone who's eligible on their first year". What the fuck is that kind of twisted thinking ?? He's letting his own personal beliefs determine his voting, totally ignoring a qualified candidate. Take away this guys voting rights. I guess he would have left off Ruth, Gehrig, Cobb and others on the first ballot too.
And another thing....screw that milestone stat crap that makes you HOF worthy. So what if Don Sutton won 300 games, he did in in like 30 years. He just stuck around long enough to get to 300, a .500 pitcher at best. I wonder if Dave Kingman would have reached 500 homers, would he have been a Hall of Famer ??

Dude, refer to my last post.......he won't even be considered due to his involvement with cocaine. The hell with his stats and his importance to the Mets and Cards, he's a bum as far as the sportswriters are concerned.

Every time I hear Jim Rice's name, I remember the line from Jim Bouton's book, Ball Four. Every time Rice would come to bat, they would yell from the dugout, "What comes out of a chinaman's ass?"

Yeah I agre about Don Sutton. His last good season was 1974 for Christ sakes. Compilers suck but remeber Bert Blyleven. He had over 200 strikeouts for 14 straight seasons. He had 3500+ strikeouts in a 20 season career but he played for the sucky teams in thier day. Lee Smith didnt get in this year and hes the all time save leader. IF Rollie Fingers and Hoy Wilhel could get in, so can he even though relivers are a dime a dozen now.

didn't he hit a home run in the '86 playoffs that made some reliever on the angels kill himself?
keith hernandez should get in before mattingly.

That was actually Dave Henderson.
The Angels pitcher was Donnie Moore.

I'm a lifelong die hard Cincinnati Reds fan, and I can remember how relieved I was that we didn't have to face Jim Rice in the 1975 World Series. He had broken his hand at the end of the season and missed the entire post season.
He was an incredible slugger through the latter half of the '70's but I'm still not sure he belongs in the Hall.
