Remember these things? Our CDs used to come in these large boxes that were no thicker than the CD, but were about a foot and a half tall.

I heard they were made to make CDs hard to shoplift, but I guess eventually the Environmentalists won. They WERE very wasteful.

On the other hand, they did look nice and had bigger artwork on some, if memory serves.

HOLY SHIT! I was thinking of these earlier. I miss them and still have a few hanging around in mybox of thrash and death magazines and stuff. So many of the older album covers deserved to have the box because the art work was so great. It tells me that the music industry didn't want to get rid of the vinyl completely because the apparently felt guilty for decreasing the size of the art work. All those Maiden and Priest covers. The Obituary, Slayer and Death covers. CARCASS corpse collages! The tiny CD lost so much but in some cases, CD's were a necessary evil. God bless the countries who STILL sell vinyl in their major retail stores and Indie labels who still press it. Vinyl will make its comeback!

Every day striving for the
Pewter Helmet Award of
Shame.

Yep.

I remember that cardboard packaging. And then some places kept the CDs in those plastic cases (same dimensions) which were removed after purchase.

i personally am glad to be rid of them. there's just no need for those big boxes. i really didn't find that they added anything to the cd, or the cd buying experience. i like it better now, where you have less to carry coming out of the cd store. yay for the environmentalists

I still have a Rush - Roll The Bones long box cover on my bulletin board at home.

And after they stopped the long boxes, the record store racks were already set up for the long boxes, so they used those long plastic things to stop shoplifters.
