Kids Selling Candy Outside Stores...

What is up with this new phenomenon that I see outside almost EVERY single store now. I'm not talking about girl scouts selling cookies, but rather the kids selling M&M's, etc who are always saying how the money goes to "youth groups" or whatever. I'm seeing a hell of a lot more of it lately, and its annoying. Because you go to one store and there's a kid begging for money, step outside and go to the next store, you get stopped by another kid. I was at a shopping center today and I got stopped twice then looked down the line of stores and there was kid outside every single store selling candy. I left the center even though there was other places I wanted to go. I just didn't to have to put up with the BS coming and going out of every single place.

There were four unattended little kids on my train to NYC selling M&M's! They had to hide from the conductor behind my seat, and they were cursing up a storm. These sales SO do not go to charity. And besides which, if I wanted to purchase expensive candy, I can go to a Broadway play. Two dollars for a stinking kit-kat!

when i was in highschool i used to have to book getting these for fundrasiers. the thing is they give them to you for next to nothing so the profit for the school is worth it.

the thing is these ghetto kids now are NOT doing it for charity. either an adult forges that he works for a school and gets them and keeps the profit once the kids sell them, or what they'll do is get the boxes from schools, go to a warehouse like Costco or BJs to get the candy very cheap, and then jack the price up and sell them to you and me.

when i used to work at a movie theater i had to chase these kids off the property or call a cop to do it. they didnt realize that outside of the theater was NOT public property! it was even worse when they came right into the friggin theater and did it!!! i used to tell them straight out "get the fuck out of here before i call the cops!". damn i loved busting those little fucks.

I am getting really tired of these kids standing outside of stores selling candy. It is at the point where I will no longer shop at the stores that allow this. It's the only way to stop it.

I don't have so much of a problem with someone selling candy, but these kids get in your face, sometimes two or three of them at a time and will give you the hard push sell from the moment you leave your car all the way to the door of the store, to when you leave the store and all the way back to your car. I had to deal with that last week in about five places.

I think the only way to get stores to crack down on this is to just no longer shop at their establishments.

Call me a skeptic but I don't think these kids are selling candy for uniforms i think they are buying the wacky tobakky.
I just look them right in the eye and say "no thank you" and brush past them. You are right though they shouldn't be in front of the stores in the first place.

Talking to the store owners/managers is a quicker avenue, and more likely to get results. A lot of store owners don't realize how pushy some of these kids get. I've flat out out told kids (And parents) selling charity items outside of the store to ease off and keep away from the front door...but they'll end up opening the door for all the customers, barraging them requests for sales, interrupting conversations, and sometimes yelling at them. But I don't often notice this because, frankly, I'm inside and they're outside. Once a customer brings it up, I always either move the kids down the street or send 'em away from the store.

I haven't personally complained though I've seen numerous other people go in the stores and complain to no results. I think the only logical way to make these stores see the err of their ways now is to just stop shopping there.

That's what happens when you cut 40% of funding from the Summer Youth Employment Program. At least they aren't seeling drugs or out getting in trouble.

And another thing, if you don't want to buy the candy, DON'T! It's not as if they're holding you at gun point or anything. Same thing with telemarketers; when they call, JUST HANG UP THE PHONE, CRY BABY! This dumb "Do Not Call" list is a joke. It just shows that alot of people would rather complain then deal with the problem themselves.

I respectfully disagree with the notion that the "do not call" list is a bad idea.

I certainly think that I should be able to restrict who calls me at my house (at the very least after certain hours).

I actually think the do not call list is less intrusive than a law restricting the hours that a telemarketer can call. Basically those that don't join the do not call list are saying, it's ok. I WANT to hear from you.

The do not call list makes more sense especially as most telemarketers call from an "out of area" or a pseudo number that you can't effectively block with "call blocking" features on your phone.

I'd much prefer that a person send me actual details in the mail. I can then pitch or read it depending on my interest and I also don't have to worry as much about someone who is intentionally vague on the specific details of an offer.

I also don't think it's inappropriate to ask for parameters around those that are selling outside of a store. If it's sanctioned by the owner of the store, then give them a certain section/area they can sell from, much like the girl scouts or bake sale folks do at their tables.

They can ask me as I pass by and I can choose to walk over to where they are rather than having someone follow me around or approach me at my car.

Tonight after work I went to Tower Records, which is one of the stores that has the kids with the candy outside. I got out of my car and was instantly approached by two kids "c'mon man, buy some candy..." they walked with me all the way to the store trying every sales pitch short of pulling on knife on me and demanding money. I walked in the store and asked for the manager.

They brought out this 18 year old pimply prick with and he asked if there was a problem. I explained that I am tired of having to deal with these kids every time I go to their store. I explained that if they don't put a stop to it I'm going to stop shopping here.

The kid told me that there's nothing they can do, and that it's "a free world". Basically defending them and telling me to deal with it. I will. I won't shop there anymore. Simple as that.

What a coward. Stores like that are private property. At my store, everything out into the parking lot (Like 15 feet, specifically), is property OF the store, and we can eject whoever we want.

In most cases, these kids are part of a scam. What happens is a pimp daddy picks kids up out the ghetto and drives them to another part of town, usually the one with lots of white people and/or college kids.

The kids then stand outside stores or even go door to door. Shit, i was in a restaraunt--well it was pretty damn close to being fast-food--and these kids were trying to hustle everyone to buy candy.

At the end of the day, these kids get picked up by the pimp daddy and brought back home. Now the kids get a little pocket money from this, definately not what a real job would pay, but they do get some.

Trust me, aint no "youth group" seeing a penny.
