View Full Version : When bands have the INVISIBLE member.

For some reason this just bugs me. Especially with the likes of Creed, when we see the publicity photos and there are only 3 member but you can CLEARLY hear the bass in the songs, why not have the current bass player in the photo. I think Bon Jovi also did this with their current bass player. Is it something against bass players? This just irritates me because it seems like they are like "Ok, he can play on stage with us but he CANNOT be in any photos". What kind of shit is that? I sure hope that Metallica doesn't go this route when their new record comes out. I would sooner see Bob Rock in the photos then have just the three of them. Do bands of multi-platinum success think we are really that stupid?

While I don't like creed,I have to defend them here. Their guitarist plays bass on their albums, but to tour they hire a studio musician to fill in as he can't play two instruments at once.

So I know bands like the Stones and KISS especially have done it. I am not really referring to the studio musicians here but the guy who is out there every night playing and still don't make the photos. Are the bands of today too big to admit that there can be no one else in the band? If that was the case KISS would have had six other guys in make-up on stage with them. I also wonder about who plays instruments behind the curtain or back stage.

In the Queens of The Stone Age video at the end, all the guys heads are on the wall except for Dave Grohl, but there's another guy and I don't know who he is. Not the singer and not the bald guy. The other guy....who is he?

Yeah.....remember when the t-shirts were made for "Stillwater", and Russell Hammond's picture was clear, and the rest of the band was out of focus........I hate that ego shit.
Seriously, it's a ego thing. Bands ( example - R.E.M. ) put together complicated studio recordings, which can not be duplicated live, hence the invisible "hired gun" to play those parts. They did not write he music, so they get no credit as being part of the band. There are some artists, like Stevie Ray Vaughn, who added to the band and credited a keyboard player for his best ( and sadly, his last ) album "In Step".

Also Nirvana had PAt Smear, a guy only with them for live shows, yet you'd think he was with the band from the beguining the way he talked to the press!
Actually, Pat Smear did officially join the band at the time of the "In Utero" sessions, and was a full-fledged member until the day they went kaput.
Dave Grohl didn't fill in for the drummer of QOTSA, as that they didn't actually have a drummer for him to fill in for. Dave was the third drummer since the band began; they've had a new one each album. They're now saying that new drummer after Dave is going to permanent. Lanegan sang on a couple of their songs from "Rated R", and like 4 or 5 songs on the latest, and is an "honorary member" of the band. The other guitarist worked with Nine Inch Nails and A Perfect Circle and is not a permanent member of the band. The only core members are Nick Oliveri (Bass, vocals), Josh Homme (Lead guitar, vocals) and the new drummer, though they have said they want to keep the "rotating cast" policy going well into their next few albums.

I believe the one eye brow dude was the original drummer, and yes, that's not a bunch of handsome looking dudes in that band........and another thing, I love it when bands do photo shoots and try to make invisible and hide in the background the "ugly" dudes in the band.

It's a tried and true fact, but the uglier a band is, the better their music is.

The Rolling Stones have been doing it for decades...
Most notably the late Ian Stewart on keyboards and horn players like Bobby Keys on sax.
The Who, I believe, has a guy who plays keyboards while on tour.

Well, the difference between Creed's videos and Bon Jovi's videos is that although there is no bassist visible in Creed's videos, Hugh (Bon Jovi's bassist) is considered a member of the band and is seen in videos, although he is a studio musician.
In fact, it's known in Bon Jovi lore that Alec (Bon Jovi's original bass player) was a lousy studio musician but a better "live" player. Hugh McDonald actually did most of the studio bass work for Bon Jovi's albums.
When Alec was fired by Bon Jovi, Hugh stepped in.
However, since Alec's departure from the band wasn't exactly amicable and there's been a ton of litigation, perhaps that's why you don't see Hugh in a lot of pictures.
Another reason could be is that Hugh isn't recognizable as one of the five main Bon Jovi guys and could alienate fans.
and reason is that... putting this delicately... Hugh isn't exactly the best looking Rock-and-Roll guy in the world. He kind of looks like a member of Blue Man Group.

I would not consider the players on Stones albums invisible. They generally credited on the albums.
Billy Preston played with the stones and the beatles on many a song.
I think as long as the person gets credit on the liner notes it is no big deal.
Thank you Ron and Fez for finally being live in DC again.

You completely missed the point of this thread huh?
Regarding Nirvana:
To add to what other people had said, Pat Smear was a member of the Germs(I think) who was a friend of the band for quite some time, he joined just before In Utero(as someone above me said) and toured with them for a bit too, most noticably appearing on the Nirvana unplugged MTV special.
Hooray for useless facts and a fuzzy memory.

My favorite example of the opposite of this is Rollins Band.
Band:
Vocals: Rollins
Guitar: Chris Haskett
Bass: Andrew Weiss
Drums: Sim Cain
Sound: Theo Van Rock
Theo gets full credit as a band member, liner notes, and pictures. The sound guy!

My buddy's band had an invisible guy for their 1st CD with a current line up photo on the back.
The guy peformed on the CD and then joined the Navy and got weird too. So they got a singer and guitaist to replace him since he did both.
Only bad part is that now neither the original guy of his 2 replacements are in that band anymore.
Life is rough!
