people in their posts,
making very cutting remarks
and then following up with a
smiley face :)

I'm sorry. Smilies don't
make it okay. They make
you a pussy. If you're trying
to insult someone, insult
them - don't try to pretend
you aren't. If you're teasing
them, I should hope that
you know each other well
enough for them to figure it
out without the smiley.

Should I care so much
about them? Of course not.
But all the same, I find them
highly annoying when used
in this context.

i agree with toocute on this. i used to add smilies after i would make a sarcastic statement or something like that (more in email than on the board, but it's all the same really) since it's very hard to convey that sort of thing through text alone. i worried that people would get the wrong idea about what i really meant. but then i realized, as toocute points out, that if i'm joking around with someone i know well enough to feel comfortable teasing, they should already know what my intention is. thus, i stopped with the smilies.

Excellent point TooCute, I as well always thought that it was a cowardly gesture. I notice similar behavior when chatting through my instant messenger. After a derogatory remark or offensive comment some people type in "LOL" as though it cleans the slate.

OK, maybe it's the coward's way out, but I think it makes sarcasm a little more intelligible to folks who may be newer to the board & the initial poster's style.

If for no other reason, I'm all for clarity. However, there are probably better ways to articulate sarcasm, italics being one of them.

In addition, doesn't outrightly insulting someone fall under "in-fighting" ? (which, if I am not mistaken, is against the FAQ)

I could be WAAAAY off-base on this one.

Oh well. I guess the change in weather has made us all cranky and hyper-critical of each other. Admittedly some of the folks who do post irk me with their style, spelling and opinions, so I just refrain from posting lest I rock the boat. It saves me time and grief in the long run.

No, I am not suggesting that smilies make it "okay", just that they make things more intelligible to newer users. And there are better ways to indicate sarcasm than smilies. . . especially since sarcasm is indicated by the facial expression known as the smirk. We can't duplicate that online, which sucks since many of our members are inherently sarcastic and I am still getting used to that fact. Especially since I haven't necessarily had the opportunity to speak or hang out with a large sampling of the folks who post here.

I do agree that if you are going to actually, out-and-out insult someone you should go and do it, but that's what I was calling "in-fighting", not the "smileys-make-it-better" concept. The smileys, as I began my post, are the, overall agreed-upon, coward's way out.

I'm with HSC and Justice in their opinion that if you really, really, really want to insult someone's post, etc., and you have qualms about how you will appear in the overall forum, that you should step outside and RF Mail (etc.) them instead.
It provides you a further cloak of anonymity and at least lets you come of as a (semi) decent person who didn't want to embarrass someone in front of the group.

And yes, Craig, this is a message board, but, if we all purposely create an openly hostile environment it won't be as much fun to post here, would it?
