i went to a gun range the other day for the first time. after watching the safety video and taking a quiz on it and all, i chickened out and didn't shoot anything. i know it's a controlled environment, and probably almost completely safe so long as you follow the instructions, but i just got really scared and couldn't do it. i was just curious if there were others out there who either enjoy shooting guns, or who are like me and hope to never have to hold a gun ever.
also, if you are one of the pro-gun people, i'd be very curious to know what your take on guns is. for instance, do you just find it entertaining to shoot at the targets and stuff? is there something more to it than that? do you own guns?

ARN. I used to teach a fire arm saftey course for the Dept of Corrections, and in the Marines was very much an expert shooter. I continue to keep up my proficiancy. If there is anything i can help you with feel free to contact me. From the little I read in your post, I beleive no one tuoght you about sight Picture or the term/method "B.R.A.S.S. Breath Relax Aim Stop Squeeze. i'm can't recall the exact ratio but it's something like for every 1/8" off the bullet misses buy a huge amout of feet per the amout of distance from the target.
I would be happy to help you all the Girls in my company have been quilified at the range under my instructionand they never shot prior.

thanks brian, but it wasn't that. i felt like i was taught properly what to do, and i had someone there with me who was more than proficient and willing to help. just the whole idea of shooting a gun, even at a target (or bowling pins, as the case was), freaked me out. it wasn't so much my being afraid of injuring myself but just the thought of shooting at all

With my dad's job, "family day" often consisted partly of a trip to the firing range. I'm talking high-class, high-falutin' government training ranges here. I've fired probably two dozen guns or so in my life, ranging from handguns to rifles to shotguns, and so while I respect what a gun can do, it also makes me realize it's WAY too easy for the wrong people to get them. So, no, I'm not a fan. Having fired them for myself, I've chosen not to own one.

after having the naughty end waved in my face too many times, i have no intention of ever firing one.

My boyfriend has all sorts of guns. I was afraid of em, then he took me target shooting with a .22 rifle he bought me and I thought it was kinda fun.
I have a 22 rifle that he bought me, that i occasionally go target shooting with upstate.

Ratio? I think you mean this
is just a simple high-school
math calculation...
remember sine = opposite
over hypotenuse? It just
depends on how far away
the target is and how long
your arms are...

I took marksmanship as a gym elective in high school and was the only girl to get an expert medal. My husband taught me to shoot a 12 gauge out at Blue Ridge in Peekskill-I'm only 5' tall and the whole line stopped shooting when I took my first shot. I think they were all expecting me to fall on my butt. It's scarey the first time, but once you get used to the recoil it's not bad. I'd personally never own a gun, but I like having some understanding of how to handle one. If your really squeamish about the real thing, you might want to try paintball. Now THAT'S fun!
