View Full Version : People Taking Advantage of Disability

I met a friend of mine last night who has had ocd and depression for years. (He hasn't been on medication for around 4 years.) He also hasn't worked and has been on disability for around 10 years.

I know this guy is capable of working even if it is doing construction type of jobs such as carpentry or painting. He told me that he even knew that it would be better for his mental health to work, but won't because he is afraid of losing disability and having to hire an attorney and fight to have to get it back.

I am sorry, but I just think there is a LOT of people out there taking advantage of receiving disability benefits - and a lot of them are on in for years (sometimes for their whole lives), and we are the ones paying for it in our taxes.

It just gets me mad and I think it is unfair for the hard working honest people out there.

along the same lines (silera will be so proud that i didnt start a new thread); people in public housing. I cant count the number of times I've hear people tell me, "I've lived in this building for almost 20 years" or "since it was built"...what the f??!! Public housing is supposed to be be temporary housing provided by taxpayers til u can get back on your feet! You should see how some of these people live...nice cars, big screen tv's, leather couches...but WE'RE paying their rent! (well, most of it anyway). Disgusting.

And, again, my point is that a lot of these people would actually be better off working and keeping their minds busy.

Yeah, I live in public housing.

I want to move, but I can't afford to pay more rent than I do now. It's impossible for me to imagine paying 1K or more for a 2 bedroom a month. I earn enough to pay my bills and splurge every so often.

I'm going to start working a second job this year to save up to buy my own house.

I agree with you that it's supposed to be temporary, and honestly, probably only 25% of the people in my building work, so it does suck.

I hear ya Chris- I work in construction and after doing a few jobs in the local "projects" I agree. It seemed as though 90% of the people that live there just live from scam to scam. We were the victims of extortion on 3 occasions and there were at least 10 other attempts. (One tenant said we ruined $500.00 of food in her refrigerator-not many people have more than $100.00 of food in theirs)In another situation a local plumbing contractor was forced to pay $10,000.00 for tv/video & stereo equipment. Can't work but has that kind of money in high tech toys-go figure. Imagine if we weeded out the deadbeats how much tax money would be saved.

FUCK THIS SHIT!!!!!!!!!

Do you know how angry this makes me right know? let me tell you. I have been diagnosed with bi-polar syndrome and depression since I was 14. For almost 12 years I have been heavily medicated (My prescriptions run almost 1000$ a month). I have to rely on Medicaid to cover that, as i can not afford insurance. Despite all of this, I still have monthly episodes where I fall into deep highs and lows, making it nigh impossible to hold a job (i got through college on brilliance alone).

YET I CAN NOT GET EITHER SSI OF DISABILITY. I went for a hearing and they ruled that i have no disability! They think i'm not crazy? i dare them to spend one day with me, and I'll change their minds forever! Freakin fuckwads!

In Newark they get cheap rent like that and then they sublet the house/apartment for hundreds more. Big scam...

Personally I would qualify for Disability, however if I'm ever asked if I want to be on it I will say NO. Even though I'm disabled I can still contribute as much as the next guy.
Disablity coverage should be reserved for those who have attempted to have a job but due to their disability could not do it. A majority of people on disability are reling on it because of laziness not necessity. I am shocked at this because I try to live my life as though I didn't have a disability. All these hangers on have resigned themselves to the fact that they aren't as "able" as most people so they won't try. This sickens me.

Yes, there are those who abuse the system. As an attorney I reffered my share to the DA for insurance fraud, perjury, etc.

As an attorney, who worked daily with the disabled for about 10 years, I can say with certainty that the overwhelming majority do not make fraudulent claims. The overwhelming majority who can work do so - for the simple reason that NYS disability benefits, SSDB and SSI payments suck and it's hard to live on them.

People who are able to work tend to work.

The much greater problem in the country is unemployment, underemployment, and the fact that there are many people who work two jobs and still can't afford housing. We need laws creating a living wage standard, instead of the minimum wage crap we have now. It's just not possible to live on minimum wage. Working a 40 hour minimum wage job will yield an annual income that is well below the poverty level.

I cannot understand how people think staying on disability is better than working and making MORE money. I mean disability does not give you more than like $500 a month. But getting health coverage thru it makes it worthwhile I guess. <P>

Yeah, but the government is a sham, ambulances run daily up and down Broad Street and you can't walk into the Starbucks without getting hit on. And that's the nice part of town!

Sharpe James should be voted out, but Essex County politics is so crooked, it makes Boss Tweed look like a saint.
