View Full Version : MAJOR computer problem
My mother claims to have a virus on her computer. However I always thought that a virus kills your computer, and doesnt allow you to do anything. In this case, her numerical Keypads are all screwed up. IE, when you press "7" on the keypad, it puts the computer in Standbye mode. Other keys do other wacky shit, on top of the, the closer ENTER button, types out a Period when you press it. Any care to explain? OR Help for that matter?

I think she's just trying to keep you out of her house, and her bed.

Viruses are not always destructive to the computer they are on, and are actually more likely to annoy the user in this fashion. However, before it is assumed that a virus is to blame there are several other avenues worth pursuing on this problem:
1) The driver for the keyboard has gone AWOL or has become corrupted, this can happen for a number of reasons, and is fixed by reinstalling the driver from disk.
2) A new keyboard was installed and either:
A) Was not installed properly and is attempting to use the previous keyboards drivers, or
B) Is not supported by Windows.
3) The connection from the keyboard to the computer has become compromised, be sure that this connection is clean and tight, and that the cable is in good shape.
4) It is also entirely possible that either a virus or a (rather large) human error has remapped the keyboard, it's fairly easy to remap a keyboard how you want it using the Windows registry(see links below) however, if a virus is the culprit it may all be for naught the next time you reboot. I would suggest running a virus scan with a reliable program on the system to be sure. In my time as a computer tech I found that when people were sure they had a virus, it was normally some because they downloaded something they know they shouldn't have and are now worried about it. It's always important to check anyway.
Please note that instructions are for Windows 2000 and higher.
IF not, with the tutorial on this site:
http://www.pitt.edu/~kconover/keithbet.htm
and these scan codes:
http://www.microsoft.com/hwdev/tech/input/w2kscan-map.asp
You can remap a keyboard.
If you need any more help with this, feel free to get in touch with me(IM or Email me at tdwidth@aol.com), I'll help in anyway I can, and hopefully I won't be as blitzed as I am right now.

ok I ran a virus scan on the computer and it came up blank. Im afraid to try those links bellow, or to remap the keyboard only becuase If I screw something up, my mother is in DEAP shit, she needs her computer for her Real Esate Buisness. I did however copy down the links and suggested her to try them her self, or call the repair man. Thanks for the help Bobimpact
