I know we may all think that every thought we have merits a new topic, but we may all be confused. By "we" I mean many of you.

If you see a discussion on, let's say just for argument's sake, pigs in a blanket, is it necessary to start a whole new topic on the various forms of pigs in a blanket? I don't think so.

Another hypothetical, you're planning on moving. LOW AND BEHOLD, VARIOUS OTHER MEMBERS HAVE ALSO CONSIDERED A MOVE! Could it be possible that your move would be best discussed in a thread that already exists?

Every time your brain manages to come up with a complete thought does not a discussion topic make.

But if you want to get nasty, that concept has been rehashed many times as a joke, and they usually lack what most jokes require which is teh funny.

I don't get you people. I can't have an opinion about the fact that the board is over run by ridiculous spin off topics that dilute the original topic and inundate the board?

New topics are great, but if you read a topic, and think of a reply and post new topic instead of replying, you're defeating the whole point of posting on a board.

Interaction is the key to a successful post.

The reason that most topics dissappear is because posters are too accustomed to posting new topics instead of contributing to existing ones.

That's all I wanted to say.

I can have fun and listen to differing opinions, but instead of telling me to chill the fuck out, explain to me why it's better to have 5 different variations on the same topic.

let me ask you Sil, will your life stop being productive if there are redundent topics? This is supossed to be fun and if people just want to post about stupid things over and over then so be it. It doesn't take away from anything or any one. It is not always easy to scroll through hundreds of old topics to reserect one.I am very guilty of post in a need of suport and some of my topics have been stupid but that is one thing I love about the board. I feel a little self conscious now

I'm not talking about resurrecting old topics. I'm talking about logging in, seeing a discussion, getting a thought from it and starting a new topic instead of adding to the discussion.

Sometimes this is done to mock the existing discussion, but usually it's done because posters like to see their name as the topic starter.
It doesn't take away from anything or any one.

Spin off topics dilute the discussion that already exists.

Before Silera thinks we're ganging up on her, I'll agree with her that very often new topics are created when there's no need for it. Usually this is done by newbies. Sometimes by people rushing to do a spy report before reading the board to see if the topic already exists. Many times, however, as was the case yesterday, redundant new topics are created to mock or belittle an existing thread. Silera's heart is in the right place, well, when it comes to the board anyway. And it WAS just a request. Not a demand, or edict. I for one will try my best to adhere to her plan. That said, the mods/admins do a pretty good job of cleaning up redundant threads when necessary.

The mods are cool, but they let a lot of redundant threads slide, even ones that other members point out as just being duplicates of ones that already exists, even going so far as to link to the original threads.

I know this isn't anyone's "job", so I'm hardly expecting people to be on this all the time, but it's just a little something that has been creeping up more and more.

If help is needed in watching out for things like this, I'm more than willing to help. Lord knows I spend too much time here as it is.

The beauty of the design of the
board is that it practically
moderates itself.

What I mean is: if a thread is
lame, redundant, or just plain
stupid then no one will reply and
it will move itself down the page
and eventually off the first page,
therefore killing it.

It's like Survival of the Fittest.

The problem is when the deputy
moderator types start replying
and pointing out the stupidity of
the thread. All they do is serve to
perpetuate it.

So, if everyone just ignored
redundant, stupid, inane, or
otherwise asinine threads, they
would dissappear.

Instead, everyone has to be a
hotshot and put their 2 cents in.

If a thread needs to be moved or
deleted, the moderators will take
care of it. There are enough of
us that it will be gone in a few
hours tops.

If it's just a stupid thread, don't
post to it, then it will go away.

This board is cluttered by holier-
than-thou repliers, not new-topic-
happy idiots.

I AGREE with Silera b/c I have done it myself.

I am guilty and therefore have stopped...anyone who is new should not feel the need to impress a plethera of topics upon the people of the board...i have found that many of them will come with negative feedback while a witty comment to another topic, many times, is well recieved and it makes the board flow alot better which is good for everyone including yourself

Back in the day I would've felt that this message warranted its own topic, it doesn't...just look at my topics, they normally fade faster than an erection at a WNBA game
