what will they think of next
The head of the Hooters restaurant chain plans to put another kind of wings on his menu, purchasing a North Carolina-based air carrier to launch a charter service aimed largely at golfers, the company announced Thursday.
Hooters chairman Bob Brooks has bought the Winston-Salem, North Carolina-based Pace Airlines with an eye toward providing charter service to his hometown, the golf mecca of Myrtle Beach, South Caroliina.
Pace Airlines currently flies 17 jets, providing charter service for sports teams such as the NBA's Dallas Mavericks and Atlanta Hawks, for corporate executives and for tour operators.
The nascent Hooters Air may start with only a single aircraft, said Mike McNeil, vice president of marketing for Atlanta-based Hooters America Inc. The new service introduced will be a separate program from Pace's current operations, which will continue, he said.
"The entire entity itself is not going to be branded Hooters," he said.
The chain is known for its tank-top-and-shorts-clad "Hooters Girls" as much as its beer and chicken wings. McNeil said company officials have not yet decided whether the charter service would take the Hooters Girls airborne.
Brooks earlier had considered purchasing the bankrupt discount carrier Vanguard Airlines, which served 18 cities from its hub in Kansas City, Missouri. But during talks with Vanguard executives, Brooks learned about Pace Airlines and eventually decided to purchase the carrier, McNeil said.
McNeil said Pace has a "bright future ahead of it," while regular airlines are struggling. And the company's sometimes-controversial brand image would be easier to transfer to a charter service than a regular airline, he said.
"Our feeling was you've got a lot more flexibility in the charter arena," he said.
