Regional Food Expressions

Forgive me if this has been done before.

When you criss cross the country, you notice people using different terms to describe the same thing. For example, where I live on Long Island, we call those things you top ice cream with sprinkles. In CT, they are called shots. In MA, they are called jimmies.

In some areas of Boston, MA, (where I went to college), they call what we call in NY generically "soda", "tonic." So if you order a meal, the server will ask you if you'd like a tonic with that, and then you can say "coke."

Then there is the case of the long piece of bread filled with hot foods like meatball, or eggplant parmigiana. We call them heros here. Other places they are called, variously: subs; hoagies; and po' boys.

And if you're from NY, don't think that a "large pie" automatically means a large pizza outside NY. I once ordered take out pizza in MA and asked for a large pepperoni pie and the person, seriously said, "we only have blueberry and apple."

experince...

hoagies is very isolated
mostly in Pa... along with
grinders.

the nyc metro area uses heros
generally, but in
westchester/bronx u get a
WEDGE.

you should see the look on

I still catch myself saying "grinder" instead of hero. I've lived here 16 years and the Massachusetts boy keeps sneaking out. The water there came from a tap, not a faucet. And we has a cellar, not a basement.

Grinder to me is really the only one that makes sense. Everything in it is all ground up. perfect description of what u want! Sub is 2nd best cuz, yeah, ok, it kinda looks like a submarine, sorta. But hero? God i have no idea how this one came about. How many superheroes would be caught eating this crap? I love going back home so i can ask for a grinder and get it. They even taste better when their called grinders.

This seriously happened. I went to Ben&Jerry's in Vermont and ordered an ice cream cone with colored sprinkles. And the chick there, a real granola, got really pissed at me and said they are not "colored." And I'm like "what the fuck" and she said they are "rainbow," colored is not politically correct.

Fucking sprinkles...I mean jimmies, I mean shots!!!
