View Full Version : Man or Boy? Woman or Girl?

Maybe it's because I'm getting older, but it always strikes me as odd when I hear on the news "An 18 year old man was convicted of arson..." or "A 19 year old woman was found guilty..."etc.

I know 18 is the legally recognized age of adulthood, but to me the previous examples are just kids, not really "men" or "women."

What age to you think a boy actually becomes a man, or a girl is truly a woman? Do you consider yourself a boy or a man? A girl or a woman?

EDIT: For the record, I consider myself a "Mannish Boy."

I'd say it would be when he/she started doing adult things like paying rent and doing their own laundry.

I think I'm a man trapped in a woman's body.

I'll take a stab at this.

I learned the ropes as an 18 year old college student who dated a woman from all-woman Wellesley College.

Politically correct or otherwise, it was and is considered condescending to females aged 18 or older to be referred to as a "girl." This, of course, only applies to women who give a shit about such things. But to be safe, all females age 18 or over should be referred to as "women." I interview high school seniors as the Chair of my college alumni admissions program. I always refer to the female high schoolers as "woman." In the age of Brittany Spears and Christine Aquilera, this sometimes gives them pause, but there's nothing as demeaning as being referred to as a "girl" by a man, despite what Cyndi Lauper might have us think.

To take political correctness to an extreme, there is a militant faction of women who call for gender neutrality in all writing. Such women refer to themselves in writing as "womyn", to get rid of the "men" part of "women." The etiology of the word woman is, or course, from the "womb", i.e womb+man=woman.

This, of course has nothing to do with maturity. I certainly feel that, in general, females (I guess I need to use the term "fems" to get rid of the "male" part) mature at a much earlier age than males.

I did not feel I started becoming a "man" until I turned about 33. Then again, I have seen many of my male friends mature awfully quickly when they have kids at an earlier age.

Certain militant lesbians not only refer to themselves as womyn, but refer to heterosexual womyn as "breeders." That's how Kim Deal came up with the name for her band after the Pixies broke up. She likes riding the pony, however, so she herself is a "breeder."

GVAC: extra chubby, Lane Bryant-sized props for your reference to "Mannish Boy."

A Man immediately thinks of Muddy Waters. A Mannish Boy might think of the Jimi Hendrix cover. A boy might not know the term or song. This may be as good a litmus test as any for determining Mannishness.

Yo da' man!

You hit 21, you're a "man" or "woman". Between 18 and 21, you're a "young adult". Anything below 18, and you're a "juvenile" or "child" or "kid".

And unless you have some crazy, weird seahorse-junk, you should ALWAYS be a boy, Gvac.

Freak. You disgust me.

GVAC - it's pure AP Stylebook Guidelines, Journalism 101. Anyone over 18 is referred to as a man/woman.

Doesn't make an indication of maturity for a longshot, though. :)

Just the way Alkey likes it. *ba-boom-ching*

I usually consider 18 to be the starting point for being a man or woman. I have to admit, though, that at 26, I'm the oldest (and most immature) girl I know.
