My roommate just started seeing this guy who lives with his ex-girlfriend and her friend. They broke up a few months ago but because of money and leases and the like, he has to continue to live with them for 8 months. The guy claims that he is completely over her and their relationship was basically nonexistent for months before she came along. He wants nothing to do with the ex and is completely into my friend, so it seems.

Can they make it work?

Sounds like a bad deal to me. The only thing better than banging a girl is banging a girl after you've broken up with her, especially if there's another broad on the line as well. How long has your roommate known this guy? An outside, unbiased view might help. What's your opinion of him, does he seem trustworthy to you? Making blanket statements in this situation is tough, it's gonna vary person to person. If he seems sincere, I say she should give him a chance, but be careful. Don't hang a guy until you know he's done a crime.

first of all, the guy could have the best intentions, it's the ex that has to behave. and unless this girl is the coolest and most understanding girl in the world (which is a one in a trillion chance) i think it's a long shot. but stranger things have happened. good luck to them though.

I don't get the "money" and
"leases" issue.

You break up. You move out.
You sleep on a friends couch for
a month while you save up for a
security deposit, etc. for a new
place.

You stick her with the lease and
rent. Doesn't matter if your name
is on the lease...if she doesn't
pay, the landlord will kick them
out and take their security. It's
not the guys problem, people do
it all the time. If you broke up
with the girl and are ready to date
other people, fucking over your
ex shouldn't be an issue.

There are lots of other options
too...you can suck it up and move
in with someone else in those
"roommate wanted" ads...it's a
scary proposition but it's better
than living with your ex.

There's something else going on
and your roommate should stay
away. Actually, know your
roommate, this is probably the
healthiest relationship she's ever
been in...

I agree with the money and the lease bull. There is no way anyone would stay under those circumstances, so it's all an excuse. Anyone who would call themselves a man, would get out of there, and be smart enough to know that staying around with an ex only can lead to problems. Trust me, no breakup is THAT mutual. I wouldn't spare an ex the time of day, let alone half the rent. <P>
