I think the only place I've seen them is on TV to show that the character was supposed to be a DORK.

So I think it's just a creation of TV.

Ill admit this...
when I was 15 and on the debate team i got a pocket protector with the debate teams name on it. I refused to wear it and i'm pretty sure it's still in the attic right now.

They do, although they are usually advertising "give aways."

I dressed as a nerd for Halloween 3 years ago and asked this herb accountant at work for one (lying, saying I thought they were awesome). He gave me like 15 and I used the one advertising WD-40.
