so in march 2003 there will be no more smoking allowed in bars or restaurants.
i swear i've never seen a mayor try so hard to not get elected again. it seems bloomburg is trying everything he can to get new yorkers and the people who enjoy the city to hate him, and its working.
now i'm a smoker so i guess i'm a little biased with this ban, but most of my friends who dont smoke think this guy is out of his mind.
bloomburg keeps trying to run the city like a business man, but being that and a politician are two different animals. i dont think he realizes that he works for the people, the people dont work for him.

as a waitress, i'm one of the people he is trying to "protect" from second hand smoke at the work place. i realize that not every body chooses to go in to this line of work, but if you're concerned about second hand smoke, maybe you should specifically look for work in a no smoking establishment. i work in a bar in the city and i think this sucks. if you live in jersey and are a smoker, would you go into the city to hang out at a bar or would you just go somewhere local so you can relax and smoke without having to go outside.
it just seems like everything bloomberg is trying to do is gonna hurt the city even more. besides, who's gonna protect me when i have to police customers and stop them from smoking after they've had a few drinks?

The Little Dictator has struck again. you will do as he wants He knows what is best for you. Sounds like what the Democratic party of Hillary and Mark Greene but he just changed labels to buy the election. After all he was a member of the liberal spend other peoples money wing for all his previous life. I still fail to see how people think he would change his stripes.

My thoughts exactly. This law is great. I couldn't give a rat's ass about my health, but I hate having my clothes reek because smokers can't go the fuck outside.

The problem with smokers going outside is that most bars don't have outdoor cafes. This law will create a situation where bars will have to control the people congregating outside to smoke, be it as they leave or arrive or if they can allow people to enter and leave to smoke.
I also think that you're just going to create a bigger drunk leaving the bar, because smoking as you drink helps you pace yourself as far as liquor goes.
It's a stupid law. If you don't like smoke, go to smoke free bars. It's not fair to completely eliminate an option for people just because others don't like it.
Hypothetical:
I don't like dogs. I am afraid of them, and think that all of them have rabies and I hate the fact that they lick me.
Would we resolve this problem by prohibiting all New Yorkers to own dogs?

This is a reprehensible violation of our civil liberties. What's stopping Bloomberg from limiting other unhealthy activities? How about a law forcing people to exercise, eat low fat foods and keep under a specific fat to body weight ratio? I consider that secondary to the larger issue which is our government dictating how we live our lives. Enjoying a cigarette while having a drink is an incredibly relaxing and enjoyable experience, and they have no right to tell me I'm not allowed to engage in both at the same time.

Yet another smooth move by Bloomie.
I think that in some cities this might work...but in this great city of NY...I don't think it will fly. Live and Let Live...and if you can't take the smoke then go someplace else.

Yeah, I'm sick of all these fat fucks taking up more than one seat on the bus and occupying too much sidewalk space as they waddle through the streets.

ok besides the smokers vs non-smokers thing look at the economic standpoint of the ban. bars in NYC are going to be crippled once this takes effect. people are going to not travel into the city, or even travel out of the city to go to enjoy a beer and a smoke all in the same bar. especially in the winter time when its colder. now of course there's still gunna be the non-smokers in the bars, but what is that 3 or 4 of you per bar? it may be the end of NYC nightlife.

I'm a non-smoker. I do have "bar clothes' (clothes I don't care if they reek of smoke). Sometimes I get annoyed by people who sometimes blow smoke in my face, but hey, that's the chance I take going into a NYC bar. Or ANY bar for that matter!
This is NOT LA!
On that note-- Guiliani (sp? sorry-- I live in Jersey!) was enforcing similar "quality of life" issues. I doubt Bloomberg could fill the shoes of the former mayor should a catastrophe happen. Stupid "laws" like this make me think we're falling back into complacency. There are far greater issues Bloomberg should worry about (the education system, the homeless problem, etc...)
