The link will eventually no longer work, since it's from a newspaper. It's just the first thing I found on Google.
His official site www.strummersite.com is not working right now, I am sure it's getting overloaded.
Well, we lost another great.
Goodbye Joe.

Wow. I hadn't heard the news, and this is really sad. Joe Strummer was one of my early heroes, and I always loved his singing far more than Mick Jones'.
The Clash were one of my favorite bands back in the day, and he'll be sorely missed.

Happy Holidays to one and all!

Wow, The Clash were among my favorites of an era, along with the Pistols, Ramones and The Jam. Aside from Sid, two Ramones died recently and now this. Paul Weller better be going in for a full physical, he's still going strong as a solo artist.
London Calling is a monolithic double album that deserves to be a double album, and reminds me of the old WLIR days.
RIP Joe.

and not to become a dick or anything
BUT
joe strummer will not recieve asmuch attention for what he had contributed to the whole music scene as Aliyah had contributed(i still do not know a song she had ever done).
it is really pathetic. I wonder if there are going to be any sort of specials or "dedications" towards Joe Strummer.
A man who nearly single handedly made the entire punkrock & 80's rock(not 80's synth) famous really wont get much attention
a girl who has only been around for 2 years has features still running about her to this day
a man who was shot do to supposidely shooting another rapper dies but only around for like 2-3 years, looked at as a god.
but people need to look at it more. what did that person do for their *scene*.
yeah, it was really said when jammaster jay died.. because he was a pioneer, just like Joe strummer. they are one in the same.
enough of my rant. im probably going to piss people off anyhow... it's just my feelings on the issue

Joe Strummer, frontman of the pioneering punk band the Clash, has died in England at the age of 50, according to a report by Reuters. The cause of his death was unknown, and the report said an autopsy would be scheduled. The Clash are scheduled to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003, and there had been hopes of a reunion tour.

I had the honor of meeting Joe early in the year in 2000, he was a gentleman and tolerated everyone fawning all over him very well. While he may not get a front page article, his fans will remeber his work with both the Clash and with the Mescaleros.
LONDON (Dec. 23) - Joe Strummer, frontman with the Clash whose 1979 track "London Calling" exploded as one of punk's biggest anthems, has died at the age of 50, a spokesman said on Monday.
The singer, guitarist and songwriter died on Sunday at his home in Somerset, western England of unknown causes.
"We do not yet know the cause of death, but we believe it was not suspicious and that he passed away peacefully. An autopsy will be forthcoming," the spokesman said.
Born John Graham Mellor in Ankara, Turkey, Strummer's talents propelled him from busting on the London Underground to fame with the Clash, who with the Sex Pistols defined the in-your-face sound and style of 1970s British punk.
Until they split in the 1980s, the Clash produced a catalog of punk classics, including "Career Opportunities" and "Should I Stay or Should I Go?," distilling the depression, anger and energy of 1970s Britain.
But they transcended the three-chord aggression to deliver messages of anti-racism and social consciousness. Strummer, the son of a British diplomat, wrote many of their biggest hits.
"He was one of the most important figures in modern British music, a powerful performer and wordsmith on a level with Bob Dylan," said Pat Gilbert, editor of British music magazine Mojo
"His music had compassion and vision, backed with an agenda to change the world for the better," he told Reuters.
Sometimes described as rebels with a cause, the Clash fused a variety of musical styles -- reggae, funk and even rap -- with a political message that brought punk to the mainstream and also found big success in the U.S. market.
Bono, lead singer from the Irish band U2, said: "The Clash was the greatest rock band. They wrote the rule book for U2."
DEFINITIVE PUNK
In 1976, Strummer met a then 23-year-old guitarist Mick Jones and linked up with bassist Paul Simonon and drummer Terry Chimes. As the Clash, the quartet made an immediate and explosive impact in Britain.
Rolling Stone magazine called their 1977 eponymous debut "The definitive punk album."
Follow-ups "Give 'Em Enough Rope" (1978), and "London Calling" (1979) also became instant punk classics. After The Clash split, a tireless Strummer stayed center stage with a variety of projects, dabbling in acting and writing music for films.
More recently, Strummer toured with a new band, the Mescaleros, and played a benefit concert with Mick Jones in November, reuniting with his partner in punk for the first time in nearly 20 years.
At the time of his death, Strummer was collaborating with U2's Bono and Dave Stewart, formerly of the Eurythmics, on an AIDS awareness track.
"The Clash are to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame next year and there was hope that there would be a reunion and a tour...this must be especially sad for their fans," Gilbert said.
Strummer's death was a double blow for punk fans still mourning the fatal drug overdose in June of singer Dee Dee Ramone from legendary American band the Ramones.
Strummer is survived by his wife, two daughters and one stepdaughter.

Well actually aaliyah put out her first album in 1993 so she was around a little longer then just 2 years. And why would people who dont know who he is be an idiot, i dont listen to that type of music so i am an idiot, did i call you one for not knowing things about aaliyah, its all about the genre of music you like.
And aaliyah died at the age of 26 or 27 in a plane crash not a drug overdose like many former rock stars do. She also has many many hits and her fourth album was just released not to mention she had already starred in Romeo must Die and was to be a big part of the Matrix series and was also the star in the queen of the vampire movie.
Her career was cut short by someone else not because she chain smoked cigs and consumed mass quantities of alchol along with doing coke to make her heart weak like the rest of these fading "legends". But i wont criticize the dead because that does no good i guess it helps you feel better to do that

in the late 70's & early 80's that unfortunatly most of the bands had to have a gimmick. not the clash, they were just loud and cool. train in vain buddies.

joe was one of the for fathers of modern punk, pop, rock, ska, rap a legand and if it werent for him and people like him none of us would be hearing the music of today. I believe what is happing now is that the first wave of punk is about to close its doors for ever with the passing of so many of the founding father gone it is time for the next wave of bands to take the spotlight and one up those bands. and on the hole coverage of joes death and many of the other people in the last 5 years is very simple answer rap sells R&B sells records when two street thugs kill each other it is not about there deaths its about money in the medias pockets I bet it was ted turner who put a contract out

I'ts been said that the plane crashed because she demanded that all of her stuff go with her, overloading the plane and making it too heavy. Let's not raise anyone to sainthood either, here... 5 or 6 other people died in that crash, too

So aliyah put out her first album in 1993 but yet, in 1998 she was claiming to be 16 and banging R Kelly. Yeah, thats a great role model i must say. Promoting underage sex to the world.
And yes, it was proven that Aliyah had demanded that all her luggage be on the plane. and the plane had crashed due to being over weight. Plus the sesna plane they were flying in had to many people in it.
My statement of the "for the idiots who do not know" was sarcasm. this is supposed to be a comedy board, right? hmmm... If you get that easily offended, never meet me in real life. And what are you doing listening to ron and fez then?
And first off, how can you not know who Joe Strummer is? You never heard of The Clash? They NEARLY single handedly pioneered punk rock and rock'n'roll of their time. They were completely original.
Then you look at Aliyah, I looked it up and she did not have one number one hit. So how does that make her this "ICON" that everyone is making her out to be? Aliyah in all honesty sounds like many other R&B singers out there. She did not pioneer anything.
Wow, big deal she was in a movie. I was in a major motion picture, does that make me famous?
So i guess only rockstars do drugs. Jimmy Hendrix, he didnt die from drugs... all natural causes! Easy E... died of natural causes too! There is no such thing as drug use and alcohol abuse within the hiphop community what so ever.
So tell me, How did Aliyah *pioneer* the R&B scene?
How did Lisa "left eye" Lopes *pioneer* the hiphop scene?
How did Biggie Smallz *pioneer* the rap scene? he was only around for about 4 years. He had also come into a scene which was very popular at that time and was brought in under one of the biggest moguls out there.
Tupac.. I will say about Tupac that he was one of the original "gangsta rappers". So murdering people and doing drugs and murdering more people and committing crimes is alright in your book!
And for all you other people, i am not critizising rap what so ever. i am just making a point. I listen to a handful of rap and hiphop. But i do not listen to the R&B of today, because 99% of the artists within the R&B community do not write their own music nor do they write their own lyrics.
Another reason why i do not like R&B is because they always sing to a backup of their own voice. That most of these R&B singers out there today are completely studio generated and sound HORRIBLE in real life( ie J.Lo)
But see, I will also say that the scene that i am in. The Punk, Oi, Hardcore scene that there is alcohol consumption, that there is drug use, that there is violence. But i can admit that. Thats what my scene was based on because we are outcasts of society. We are the urban soldiers of the street.
And that is my 2 cents on this matter.
AGAIN, I STATE THIS ISNT BASHING HIPHOP. THIS IS JUST PROVING THAT THE SHOE FITS ON BOTH FEET.

I'm on the mailing list of Warren Ellis, a decent comic book writer these days, and a pretty twisted guy...he sent out this little message after hearing about Strummer, and I thought it was pretty cool...
I wonder how many people really
felt the heartpunch of Joe Strummer
dying. Without The Clash, punk had
no focussed political voice, and
without that, the 1980s would've
sounded very different. It's the
Clash that informed west coast
American punk. It's the Clash that
told Billy Bragg that, yes, he could
make songs about what was in his
head, long before he found Woody
Guthrie. Acts like Chumbawamba are
the thinnest echo of what the Clash
could be. Without the Clash, punk
would've turned into nothing but
bloody Sham 69.
Pausing to think about it, Joe Strummer
sitting down and dying at 50 isn't that
much of a surprise. He pulled some
infamous geographicals, disappearing
on three-week binges, losing his shit
on stage and harvesting fans with
the edge of his guitar. These are
not things conducive to a healthy
cardiac system, believe me.
But it's still a punch in the guts. Mick
Jones faded away -- kept moving
as long as he could, with "E=MC2",
"V-13", the autumnal "Good Morning
Britain", and then vanished into the
mist. Joe Strummer kept moving.
Looked back maybe once, with the
Pogues, on a storming cover of
"Honky Tonk Woman." But that
was it. Kept doing new things,
formed new bands, developed, pushed
forward. And sure, not as many
people were listening. The Clash
suicided around 1985, and Strummer
walked away from music for what
was probably a crucial period.
But a year or two ago, Strummer was
flying home from Australia with his
family. Economy class. His stepdaughter
was giving him shit about it: "I thought
you were a big-deal rockstar." He
told her to cope with it. And then a
member of the cabin crew spotted
him. Said, stay here. I'm moving you
to first class. You're Joe Strummer
and in 1981 I saw you live and you
changed my life and you are going
to fly first class. Strummer talked
about it in a newspaper, with utter
disbelief.
Joe Strummer had glory about him.
Listen to "London's Calling" and tell
me I'm wrong.
I was talking to Laurenn about this
yesterday -- probably the only
person I was talking to yesterday
who really understood what was
going on in my head, Niki won't get
it until Vince Clarke or Meat Loaf
pop their clogs -- and she said
something to the effect of, If I'm
this sad today, what will it feel like
when Exene Cervenka goes? That
sent me to Lydia Lunch's website,
my own personal touchstone from
that era.
But that's the thing about losing
your youth. All your touchstones
start dropping away into dark water.
And I live on a river.

From VH1 -- after Joe found out the band was inducted to the hall of fame.
When assured the Clash had been inducted, he said, "That's good. There was a short list, but I thought the Police would win."
The producer informed him that the Police were also inducted. "Good, so they're in too. Do you think everyone's gonna play?"
The question might have been sardonic, since the Clash had repeatedly refused to reunite despite lucrative offers. But this time Strummer seemed genuinely excited about the idea of returning to the stage with his former bandmates - guitarist Mick Jones, bassist Paul Simonon and drummer Topper Headon. Strummer and Jones had a good time playing together for the first time in 20 years on November 16 at a charity gig at London's Acton Town Hall.
"I think we should play [at the hall of fame ceremony]," Strummer said. "It would be sh--ty and snotty not to."
Thank you Ron and Fez for finally being live in DC again.
Philly is the next market for the boys. Wake up WYSP...
